The Geeky Weekly: January 3 – January 10
January 10, 2016What a beginning to the New Year! Lots of news and lots of enthusiasm for what will be a great year in comics, video games, movies, TV and any other venue you can consume anything remotely geeky.
And, as a reminder, here are a few lists we’ve compiled to get you hyped. We’ve got 2016 comic conventions and TV show returns/premieres, and be sure to check the site or the GCE’s social media often as we will be updating those lists and bring you more.
∴ Have you had enough Transformers in your life? No? Michael Bay is returning to the franchise to direct the fifth installment. It was rumored in September by Deadline, that Bay would be back in the chair, but now Rolling Stone has confirmed it. Bay is currently on a press tour for his Benghazi based movie 13 Hours, as well as working on post-production for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 movie. The fifth Transformers movie should be out in 2017.
∴ Another treat coming in 2017 is the next Assassin’s Creed video game. While Ubisoft has released an Assassin’s Creed every year since 2009, starting with Assassin’s Creed 2, this will be the first time in those years that they are skipping a year. With a working title, and not yet known to be it’s permanent title as told to Kotaku, Assassin’s Creed Empire, will go way back in time to visit Ancient Egypt.
∴ Cinematography has been one of the greatest benefactors to technology development. RED is one of those camera companies that consistently develop newer and more beautiful equipment that take incredible shots. One of RED’s latest cameras is the Weapon 8K, and the company was excited to announce that the first film to shoot with it is Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. From RED’s press release:
WEAPON 8K captures 8K at 75 frames per second (fps), 6K at 100 fps, or 4K at 150 fps with REDCODE® RAW; and its wide dynamic range produces cinema-quality images rich with natural color. Additionally, WEAPON 8K features interchangeable lens mounts, an intelligent OLPF system, and in-camera 3D-LUT outputs.
“RED’s 8K WEAPON is the little big camera. Perfectly counterintuitive. And perfect for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2,” says Henry Braham, BSC, Director of Photography.
∴ This past week we received the first image of Paul Reubens, AKA Pee-wee Herman, as Cobblepott’s (The Penguin, played by Robin Lord Taylor) father on Fox’s Gotham. Gotham returns February 29, but it is unknown what episode or episodes we will see The Penguin’s father on. Not only that, but Gotham’s Ben McKenzie teased at Wizard World New Orleans that the birth of Batgirl would be something the show would like to handle, and with Barbara Kean set to rejoin the show, it’s a possibility.
∴ At the Television Critic Awards this past weekend, it was announced by The CW that Kevin Smith would be directing an episode of The Flash. While he’s never directed a comic book related TV or film, he has written comics and the script for Superman Lives. There was no word on the exact date audiences will be seeing that episode, but The CW said we could expect it in May.
