Spider-Man Will Get A MCU Debut
February 10, 2015In one of the most tumultuous comic book sagas of our time that had nothing to do with the content of the book, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios have finally reached a deal concerning Spider-Man. The end result after months of back and forth negotiations and a slew of rumors has ended; and Spider-Man may be slinging his way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe soon.
In a press release posted to the Marvel.com site, the unique partnership between the studios was outlined in a loose itinerary. We can expect a brand new cinematic Spider-Man franchise to launch on July 28, 2017. The film will be Sony produced, but a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The producers are Sony’s Amy Pascal, responsible for launching the Spider-Man franchise 13 years ago for the studios, and Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige.
In the press release it is stated:
Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films.
The deal is not just limited to Spider-Man, the two studios are also looking into incorporating other Marvel characters into the Spider-Man films. There may also be a chance Spider-Man can be introduced into the MCU prior to his standalone release, Captain America: Civil War is just one early speculation.
President Kevin Feige expressed his excitement for the partnership by saying, “I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years.”
Marvel will have a creative hand in the making of the new Spider-Man films, but Sony has the ultimate decision concerning storylines as they will be providing capital for them.
“This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans,” Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO and Chairman Michael Lynton commented.
After the announcement, Marvel changed the dates of several films in the line-up. The first being Thor: Ragnarok which would have also shared the July 29, 2017 release date at the new Spider-Man. The other films changed are Marvel’s Black Panther is moved to July 6, 2018, and Marvel’s Captain Marvel to November 2, 2018. Marvel’s Inhumans will hit theaters on July 12, 2019.
