The Geeky Weekly: March 16 – March 22

March 22, 2015 0 By EVA

With winters’ end comes the outlook of a very lush and exciting spring. In the next coming weeks we will be treated to Marvel’s Daredevil, the uptick of Comic Cons, and plenty other nerdy goodness. Just this past weekend staff from The GCE attended the Toronto Comic Con, so look out for write-ups and cosplays! Plus, check out our March Madness Sci-Fi Tournament and Interview with Sex Criminals and Howard the Duck artist Chip Zdarsky (we’re running a contest to win a signed comic of his on our Facebook!)

To get us through the last few bitter days of an seemingly long winter, take a gander at some of the news you may have missed!

∴ Neil deGrasse Tyson’s TV show StarTalk finally has a landing date on our televisions and however else you like to watch shows. On April 20, the show featuring everyone’s favorite astrophysicist will premiere on the National Geographic Channel. We are totally down for pop culture space fun!

∴ Captain America: Civil War is set to begin filming April 1 in Atlanta. A casting call surfaced online with this reported information along with the synopsis. Civil War pits Steve Rogers against Tony Stark and will hit theaters on May 6, 2016.

∴ Artist Billy Butcher dropped some wonderful artwork on the Internet and it picked up virally. Entitled ‘Post-Punk, Super-Friends,’ Butcher imagined iconic post-punk figures as caped crusaders. The results come in the form as Batman gets a Joy Division twist, and Thor becomes Billy Idol. Take a look at these and more on Butcher’s website. You can even purchase the artwork and t-shirts!

∴ Vertigo’s iZombie was introduced across screens this week. It is the first show to come out of DC’s affiliate Vertigo Comics. Did you catch it and is it a new zombie show worth watching? We’d love to hear your feedback!

∴ There was much controversy last year when Marvel announced the next strain of Thor would be fronted by a female Thor. Despite the naysayers, this female Thor is wielding Mjolnir to acclaim, boasting big sales!

∴ Who are Selina, Riddler, Bruce, Alfred, Hugo, Luke, Lucy, Quinn, Ivy, and Oswald one may ask. ‘They’re Batman characters from the comics, tv series, and movies!’ you are quick to quip. But alas, you are wrong! They are the names of the 11 new additions to Cincinnati Zoo’s Painted Dogs. You can read and view more pictures of the puppies on their official blog. Someone over at the zoo must be super geeky.

It all started when the one puppy we could distinguish from all of the others had an upside down white question mark on his back. This one clearly had to be called Riddler. The rest just followed. – Dana Burke, Cincinnati Zoo’s Blog

We’ll see you all next week in another edition of the Geeky Weekly!
