Brass Sun #1 Review

On May 28th, 2000AD debuted it’s first American format mini-series with Brass Sun #1. The first print circulation sold out very quickly and has sparked a 2nd printing for those that missed out on this great comic. I had the great pleasure of being able to read the first issue and I’d like to tell you all about it while keeping spoilers to an absolute minimum.

From Rebellion/2000AD. The Orrery is a clockwork solar system where planets whirl on vast metal arms and the sun of cogs is worshiped as a god. But the sun is dying, the planets are freezing one by one, and cults burn as heretics those who warn of the danger. To save her home, young Wren knows she must first escape it and find the key to restart the sun. An incredible new SF-clockpunk series from the bestselling artist of New Deadwardians and the writer of Scarlet Traces.

The science fiction tale revolves around a solar system that is planted on a gear-like clock mechanism. The tale opens up and gives you insight on a few of the main characters and gets the journey started right away with the hero starting her quest to saving the world. Character development is key to a great story which is something Ian Edginton and I. N. J. Culbard do wonderfully. The art in the book is not going to be in a style you are familiar with if you’ve stuck to the likes of things like Batman, but this is what makes Brass Sun stand out. The simplistic style is beautifully romantic to the story being told, allowing you to follow the story and enjoy the artwork in perfect harmony.

Comic Book Resources describes Brass Sun as “a beautifully rendered and textured world that presents something unique and engaging.”

Limited copies of the second run are being snatched up quick so it’s advised to place your order at your local comic shop and get in on this six issue mini-series before it’s too late and you are left hunting it down at comic shops or conventions. Issue #2 isn’t far behind with a release date of June 25th.

Following the success of Dredd: Underbelly and its amazing feat of hitting reprint status due to sales before the first print even hit shelves, it’s without a doubt there is a hungry market for 2000 AD to be publishing in the American formatted comic style.

I honestly can’t say enough good things about this book. It’s not too often that a series will jump out at me and is immediately recognized as a award winning style book. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if you are looking back in a few years and saying ‘Brass Sun was one of the great series I’ve read’ along with comics like Locke & Key and others that manage to stick with people long after they’ve read the material. 2000 AD, we can’t wait to see more.
