Is Ant-Man in Avengers: Age of Ultron?
May 7, 2015Be warned: this article contains spoilers for Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Does Ant-Man appear in the Avengers sequel?
Well… maybe. We can’t say for sure because he’s really small. But is it impossible? After watching the film, and reading some of what’s been written about Ant-Man so far, I say it’s definitely NOT impossible.
Okay, so maybe you think I’m crazy at this point; but stick with me for a second. Here’s what we know:
Marvel tweeted a reveal of Ant-Man’s new poster, calling Ant-Man the newest member of the team.
Cinemablend reported, based on a set photo, that Ant-Man might actually be taking place slightly in the past, around the time of The Incredible Hulk starring Edward Norton, which means by extension, it may not be wholly set around the time of Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Why could these things be important?
Well, firstly the next Avengers movie doesn’t come out until 2018, so it’s a bit weird to describe Ant-Man as the newest Avenger three years before he joins the team.
Secondly, the fact that Ant-Man might be set in the not-too-distant past could mean that his actions somehow build to the Avengers’ battle with Ultron (Hank Pym is is creator in the comics after all, so it’d have a nice symmetry if true) and while they are fighting that artificially created monster, Ant-Man fights a parallel threat that eventually brings him into the Avengers’ fold.
What a marvelous turn of events it would be if one of the final scenes of Ant-Man showed War Machine, Scarlet Witch, Vision, and the Falcon in front of Captain America and Black Widow from Scott Lang’s perspective, revealing to the audience that he’d been there the whole time; we just couldn’t see him because he was too small.
It may be a wild theory, but it certainly isn’t outside the realm of possibility.
Marvel’s clearly super clever, so I certainly wouldn’t put it past them to try and sneak Ant-Man into the Avengers sequel in this roundabout way.
