The Geeky Weekly: December 20, 2015 – January 3, 2016
January 3, 2016Here at the Geeky Weekly and the GCE we hope you have had a wonderful holiday season, and have acclimated to writing a six instead of a five at the end of the year. At least it is an easy fix if you mess up. We also hope you got lots of new geeky merchandise and have seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens at least another 17 times.
The past two weeks have revved us up here at the GCE for the New Year. We’ve got a year chock full of cons, which we’re put together a great guide, and also another guide on everything we’re excited for. There is also the winter TV guide so you don’t miss any of your favorite shows or soon-to-be favorite shows airdates. Check them out and we hope to see you at these events and more!
∴ While The Force Awakens is nearly at the mark to overtake Avatar’s reign as the highest grossing movie… ever, director James Cameron had good news to bring to fans via the Montreal Gazette. Cameron says the long awaited sequel should be in theaters as early as Christmas 2017. Zoe Saldana, who played lead Neytiri in the 2009 epic, also posted to her Facebook a picture of her with the bust of Neytiri and captioned it that she was discussing secrets.

∴ Benedict Cumberbatch had a good week. Not only did the Sherlock holiday special The Abominable Bride air after what felt like 90 years, but also official pictures of Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange emerged. We’ve seen leaked set photos, but there is nothing like the stunning official photos Marvel and Entertainment Weekly and the hoary hosts of Hoggoth graced us with. Well done, Marvel, very well done. Doctor Strange will be out later this year on November 4 and also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, and Mads Mikkelsen.
∴ The voice of Boba Fett in The Empire Strikes Back, Jason Wingreen passed away on Christmas Day. The 95 year old voiced the beloved Star Wars bounty hunter but wasn’t credited until 2000. He starred in more than 200 films and movies including Star Trek and The Twilight Zone. RIP sir!
∴ While Final Fantasy VII may be getting the remake treatment from Square Enix, Final Fantasy IX will be on our phones and PC’s soon. There’s no release date for the remastered version, but we do have a lovely trailer!
