Director: Joss Whedon
Cast: Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson

Who?
Current kings of superhero films. The first ‘Avengers’ is the third highest grossing movie of all time.

Should I care?
Well it’s predecessor is the third highest grossing film of ALL time.

…but it is a film with a team, so trying to learn everyone might be tricky. Chances are you know at least one: There’s Thor, and Captain America. There’s Hulk, and Iron Man. There’s also Black Widow, and Hawkeye. This is a tough one to cram into your brain!

What do I need to know?
Robert Downey Junior reprises his role as Iron Man. Again. It’s directed by Joss Whedon. He did ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ which is much loved by fans worldwide. Drop these two names and you’re golden.

How do I sound knowledgeable?
“I wonder if Vision will develop any feelings because of Scarlett Witch”

Story?
When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and it is up to the Avengers to stop the villainous Ultron from enacting his terrible plans

Important Point?
Most anticipated superhero film of the year.

Talking Point to Raise?
“Will Black Panther be in it?” (Step aside and let someone else run with it – tangents are sure to follow).

Comic Related Fact to Use
“Will this trigger ‘Civil War?’” (Again leave it for others to hold up the conversation).

Ant-Man
Release Date: July 17th
Director: Peyton Reed
Cast: Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas
FEATURED

Who?
A con-man with hi-tech suit lets him shrink way down in size… and control ants.

Should I care?
It’s a heist movie so it should be entertaining. It is also separate from regular Marvel films, so could be solid and unexpected. Long-term might signal many more C-list characters getting their own movies.

What do I need to know?
The film stars Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas, so it should move from serious to funny with ease. This is the modern Ant-man and not the ‘classic’ comic version.

How do I sound knowledgeable?
“I still wish Edgar Wright was directing it.”

Story?
Armed with a super-suit with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

Important Point
It’s a big departure for director, Peyton Reed, who is known for lighter comedies like ‘Yes Man’ and ‘Bring it On’.

Talking Point to Raise?
“Are they going to put him in the Avengers?”

Comic Related Fact to Use?
The original Ant-Man, Hank Pym, created Ultron (see above).

Fantastic Four
Release Date: August 7th
Director: Joss Trank
Cast: Kate Mara, Toby Kebbell

Who?
Marvel’s very first superhero team, and a family to boot.

Should I care?
Meh. Its a reboot of a turgid couple of films from 2007. The trailer is as generic as possible, and it is from FOX, not Marvel Studios direct.

What do I need to know?
The director made his name with the low-budget super-hero/home-movie film Chronicle. He’s been touted as a possible director for a Star Wars film.

How do I sound knowledgeable?
“I hope Jaime Bell has been taking mo-cap lessons from Andy Serkis”

Story?
A quartet is transformed after being sent into alternate dimension. They unite to save the Earth from dangerous old colleague.

Important Point?
Based on the revised ‘Ultimate Fantastic Four’ storyline.

Talking Point to Raise
“It can’t be worse that ‘Rise of the Silver Surfer right? Right?!”

Comic Related Fact to Use
Marvel cancelled the comic in December 2014 because of poor sales.

DC Comics

Slow year for these guys… check back in 2016.

So there you have it! You know what to expect from the comic book world this coming year. Get ready, because it only gets busier from here onwards!

If in doubt remember: “Guardians of the Galaxy was great” and/or start dancing like Groot.
