The director of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Gil Kenan, said in an interview with Empire that the creatures from the new flick were actually inspired by an unlikely source: the 1980s animated series The Real Ghostbusters, which ran from 1986 to 1991.

“We wanted to bring in that show’s looseness and fearlessness,” Kenan said, after noting its “wild, original, and weird-as-fuck villains” influenced the upcoming blockbuster.

You may not remember the cartoon, but it’s the one that redeemed Slimer, and made him a friend and ally to the Ghostbusters. Its seven seasons were particularly enjoyable, and I may have purchased a Ray Stanza Real Ghostbusters action figure with a month of allowance from Toys-R-Us at some point in my youth. My tiny heart sings at the thought of Frozen Empire being infused with some of that wacky spirit. (Yes, I went there.)

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire hits theatres on March 22nd.
