Colleen Atwood, a three time Academy Award winning costume designer for such films as Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha, and Alice in Wonderland is busy.
In 2016 alone she has five credits to her name including Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Alice Through the Looking Glass, The Tick, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, and The Huntsman: Winter’s War, available today on Blu-Ray and DVD.
While for the most part her film slate for the year is based in the fantastic, she likes to ground her designs in reality to make the characters more approachable to the audience. “For The Huntsman: Winter’s War, I started with 10th and 11th century Flemish designs, and built up the more fantastic elements from there.”
Her award winning skills are evident throughout Huntsman, bringing a feeling of whimsy to the costumes without making them seem garish or overdone. Even where there could be considered excess it somehow seems appropriate, not in any way out of place.
“It was exciting to be able to costume three strong women,” in The Huntsman: Winter’s War, Atwood said, speaking of Charlize Theron’s Revenna, Jessica Chastain’s Sara, and Emily Blunt’s Queen Freya. “Each had their own unique personality and we were able to design their looks to suit.”
While she didn’t have as much pre-production time on The Huntsman: Winter’s War, as she did on Snow White and the Huntsman, Atwood was able to create a surreal collection of costumes; in fact it’s one of the thing that stands out most about the film!
It was a privilege to speak to such an accomplished creator about her work on The Huntsman: Winter’s War!
