Renee Montoya Returns In Detective Comics #41
March 17, 2015DC’s new solicitations each month always have comic readers like a kid on Christmas, and with the reveal that Renee Montoya would finally be making a seemingly permanent return to Gotham with Detective Comics #41 made me the happiest kid in the world.
A favorite member of the GCPD is back and ready for action after her disappearance from DC Comics since the New 52 began. The character will also be headlining her own Convergence title in May with Convergence: The Question. While she was referenced briefly during a few beginning issues in the ongoing run of Batwoman, it was simply for the sheer element that she was once the girlfriend of Kate Kane.
This doesn’t mean that Renee Montoya has been completely absent from the the comic world these past few years. The character has appeared in the digital first comic series Injustice Gods Among Us based off of the hit video game from NetherRealm Studios that debuted last year. More recently, Renee Montoya has been a featured character on the hit show Gotham, portrayed by Victoria Cartagena who has been delivering spectacularly on her role.

So what could this mean for the character? Although the description for Detective Comics #41 is brief, simply stating, “What kind of welcome awaits his [Harvey Bullock’s] new partner, Renee Montoya?” could this mean that Montoya will take back her mantle of the Question? It seems that the original Question, Vic Sage won’t be doing so anytime soon. We’ve seen her headline her own series before with The Five Books of Blood in 2009 and Pipeline in 2011 both written by Greg Rucka who is also returning to the character for Convergence, so it’s not entirely out of the Question, no pun intended! I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to seeing yet another title headlining Renee Montoya.
With Convergence coming up this is just a first look at the new world of the DC universe and its characters that will shape up after the two month long event. Kate Spencer, yet another long missed character, is also making her return in Gotham After Midnight. This is just a small step that DC is taking to bring back the diversity it held amongst its titles before the company rebooted itself. Perhaps these are just the first of many long sought after character making their eventual return home to the ongoing comics
Be sure to head out to your local comic store in June and pick up Detective Comics #41 as Renee Montoya makes her return to DC Comics.
