Jodie Whittaker has been announced as the 13th Doctor, making her the first woman to play the role and she wants Whovians to know not to be scared by her gender! They announced the casting with this short teaser at the end of the Wimbledon men’s finals.
The 35 year old actress says “It’s overwhelming, as a feminist” to become the first female Doctor, she continues “I’m beyond excited to begin this epic journey – with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet.”
The Chris she is referring to is Chris Chibnall, the creator of the series Broadchurch that she also starred in. Chibnall is taking over as showrunner for Doctor Who at the same time that she is starting her run as the 13th Doctor.
“It’s more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can’t wait.”
Whittaker will take over after Peter Capaldi’s 12th Doctor regenerates at the end of the 2017 Christmas episode of Doctor Who.
