Don’t know what to watch? Check out some of our suggestions!

Anyone who has access to Netflix knows that it is a great resource for TV shows and movies. As Netflix grows in popularity, they will continue to add more and more titles. Netflix will give the user suggestions based on what category is chosen but it has much more content to choose from then gets suggested. Unless you know what to search for, you may be missing some real gems.Below I have some suggestions of titles to search for and some that will get you started if you are new to Netflix or if you haven’t seen the titles yet.

Doctor Who: The Canadian version of Netflix just updated with all 7 seasons of the new series that started in 2005. This is one of my favorite TV shows even though I’m not totally sold on the last two seasons. As an added bonus, Netflix also has a selection of classic Doctor Who from the original series that started in the 60’s. The classics don’t have the best special effects but are still very enjoyable for any fan.

Hemlock Grove: This is a Netflix original show, which means it updates an entire season at a time and is only available on Netflix. The original series have really been growing in popularity and with good reason; they are all very good shows. Well written with well-known actors and each one is different. Hemlock Grove is no exception. The show revolves around a town where all kinds of strange things are happening and people are dying. Oh yeah — everyone has weird abilities, mind-control, super strength, shape shifting, clairvoyance just to name a few. This show has a very thick plot and will suck you in, and it was created by horror director and gore master, Eli Roth.

The X-Files: Yes, the grand-daddy of the paranormal genre. It’s all here, all nine seasons. There are so many great episodes that stand alone and it has an ongoing storyline that takes all nine seasons to complete. If you want to tackle the whole show, which you should, take it an episode or two at a time. This is something you just can’t blow through in a weekend. Aliens, ghosts, monsters, superhumans, spies, assassins…. it’s simply a fantastic show and if you haven’t seen it yet, you should definitely check it out.

The Crow: The first movie of the franchise and the only one worth talking about. The infamous movie that took Brandon Lee’s life, The Crow was made in 1994 and still holds up to this day. It is dark, gritty, action packed and visually beautiful. Originally a comic book created by James O’Barr, it really is a joy to watch.

The Road: This is a movie version of the book The Road by Cormac McCarthy starring Viggo Mortensen. It’s about a man and his son trying to survive in a desolate, not-far-off future where everything and everyone around them is pure evil. Mortensen’s character is only trying to keep his son alive while teaching him that he must resist doing evil things just because the rest of the world is evil. Do yourself a favour and read the book too, it’s excellent.

The Fourth Kind: Ultra realistic movie about alien abduction. This movie can freak you out if you are not expecting it. Parts of it are done in a “handicam” style, like The Blair Witch Project.

Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn: This was originally aired as a series of webisodes based on the video game of the same name. A training centre for new recruits is attacked by the covenant. It’s pretty cool to watch Master Chief swoop in and dust some aliens in live-action.

If comic books are your thing, Netflix has you covered there too. Thor, Green Lantern, Captain America, Blade, The Punisher, Hellboy 1 and 2 and a large selection animated titles are all right there for you. Don’t feel guilty about the animated ones; they are not in the kids section.

When I first opened up Netflix I was a little intimidated since the selection is so big. I wasn’t really sure where to start at first. Hopefully this gives anyone who just got Netflix a good starting point so it’s not so daunting.
