Plants vs Zombies: Bully for You #1 ReviewMay 22, 2015
Confession time: I’ve never actually played Plants vs Zombies, the wildly popular mobile game from Popcap so I wasn’t sure what to expect from this first issue of the Plants vs Zombies: Bully for You miniseries from Dark Horse Comics. Would it be full of references to the games that I wouldn’t understand? Would this comic be aimed squarely at fans of the game?
Thankfully I had nothing to worry about. Not only is Plants vs Zombies: Bully for You wildly funny, it does a fantastic job of immediately setting up the concept of the most bizarre battle between the undead and flora.
We begin by meeting Zomboss, the meanest of all the zombies, who is putting together his latest plan to destroy the homely town of Neighborville. Thanks to a series of flashbacks to his schooldays, we see that Zomboss has been a thoroughly unpleasant zombie for a long time. However, that past may be about to catch up with him…
Zomboss is just a brilliant character, and easily the highlight of the issue. His antics are flat out hilarious – at one point he literally steals candy from babies. What a fiend!
On the other side we have Nate and Patrice, two 11-year-old adventurers who are determined to stop Zomboss and gang, with the help of Patrice’s inventive uncle Crazy Dave and their many talented plant friends. Nate and Patrice have all of the sass and sense of fun that heroes in a comic like this should have, though in all honesty we don’t see a huge amount of what the plants can do. I’ve no doubt we will see more of that in the issues to come.
Plants vs Zombies is just such a funny book. Writer Paul Tobin has put together a book that just exudes joy – if you manage to get to the end of the issue without smiling, you must have a heart of stone. It actually shares the innocent sense of adventure of Tobin’s best known work, the fantastic Bandette (which you should also definitely check out). For me at least, the gags all land.
The comedy is helped immensely by the stellar artwork of Ron Chan (Husbands, Plants vs Zombies: Timepocalypse), who has built a glorious, colourful little world. A number of the gags are entirely reliant on Chan’s artwork, so he deserves a lot of the credit for the bellylaughs. Tobin and Chan are absolutely the perfect creative team for a comic like Plants vs Zombies: Bully for You.
This is the perfect comic for the young or just the young at heart, whether they are avid Plants vs Zombies gamers or not. I loved it.
