Move aside Heisenberg and make room for Jesse Eisenberg in the bald bad guy gallery as he revealed his new and stunningly iconic look in his upcoming role as Lex Luthor in the 2016 film Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. The image was released exclusively to Entertainment Weekly and it’s nothing short of stunning. This one photo alone might be the only proof we need to say that this is the Lex Luthor we have all been waiting for. If I had any doubt in Jesse Eisenberg when he was cast just last year, it’s been completely wiped away, and with how the internet has been buzzing it seems that the feeling is mutual.
It was nearly a year ago the announcement of Jesse’s new role in Batman Vs Superman hit the internet and the majority of bloggers, reviewers and comic book fans, including myself, were not happy with this direction. How could fans expect Eisenberg, an actor known primarily for his quirky and often awkward roles, in such films like Zombieland and 30 Minutes or Less, to pull off the position of one of the most menacing and malicious villains in comic book history? While Jessie Eisenberg proved what a scoundrel he could be with his role in the 2010 film The Social Network, even that didn’t seem like enough to completely sell this audience but it’s the new exclusive image that might just keep it’s fan believing.
Comic book fans have been held in suspense with just how Batman Vs. Superman is shaping up seeing as how this movie franchise has been kept tightly under wraps even going so far as to having those who work on set sign a contract of confidentiality. With this new image as well as the first look at Jason Momoa as Aquaman released just last month, fans are finally starting to see just how this new DC universe is beginning to take shape.
One thing is for certain I can definitely say that my faith is restored once again in the villain of this film. While I still await eagerly for some sort of trailer, Jesse Eisenberg and his new look along with some of the mannerisms he has portrayed in previous films already feel very much like Lex Luthor. We’ve seen the character in several films prior, including the 1988 film Superman II portrayed by Gene Hackman and the later 2006 box office flop Superman Returns portrayed by Kevin Spacey. With this new dark direction it seems the DC cinematic universe is going this might just give Jesse Eisenberg the leverage he needs to depict the perfect Luthor.
Despite the new reveal, there are still some fans not entirely sold on actor, though I would not count the main man out just yet. Only time will tell if Jesse Eisenberg has what it takes to bring the full presence complete with menace and fear, to the Man of Steel’s most classic foe.
