GTA Comic Con 2014

A new comic event is coming to Toronto that you don’t want to miss!

Can’t get enough conventions? Well, good news everyone!

On April 19th, the inaugural GTA (Greater Toronto Area) Comic Con will open it’s doors to eager patrons. For the admission price of $10, patrons have access to vendors, artists and guests including Roger E. Mitchell who was in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and The Walking Dead. What’s better is that autographs with some guests are included in the admission price. You can pick up tickets at the door or online right here.

There will be some really great comic artists there as well including Rob Guillory, who is probably most well known for his artwork in Chew a New York Times Bestseller that’s written by John Layman and published by Image Comics. Animation artist Kurt Lehner, a native Torontonian, will be there as well. Lehner has worked with companies such as Disney, Dreamworks and Marvel as a senior character designer and development artist. Comic creator Richard Comely will be on hand representing Captain Canuck, a comic featuring a hero that has become “Canada’s own superhero”. One of our personal favorites, Studio Comix Press, will also be there and will be bringing an exclusive variant cover to their comic, Night Spike #3. Studio Comix Press is funded by Canadian comic creator and illustrator (also good friend) Alfonso Espinos whose personal achievements include winning the “Cobachaward” for Character of the year in 2008. In 2010, he was also invited to participate in the creation of the Stan Lee Foundation Logo. You can visit all these artists and many more only at GTA Comic Con.

If comic guests aren’t your cup of tea, there will also be a couple wrestlers signing autographs that are also included in the price of admission. The first is Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart from the Hart’s Foundation, and the other is professional wrestler and hardcore princess, Jewells Malone.

There will also be a Cosplay Cafe, the first of it’s kind in Ontario. It’s a whole room dedicated just to cosplayers and companies like Geek x Girls and Cosplay for a Cure will be there as well. You’ll have a chance to meet the great people behind these two sites as well as have your photos taken and mingle with other cosplayers. Since they are focusing a lot on the Cosplay Cafe, the first FIFTY cosplayers that show up in costume (and no, I don’t think wearing a Batman logo tee shirt with a cape is applicable) will gain free admittance! Can’t really beat free, right? The convention will also be hosting a costume contest, so dress to impress and you’ll be able to enter the contest to win some great prizes.

But the spot where I’ll have to try my hardest not to spend all day? The Vintage Arcade. That’s right, GTA Comic Con is giving us all a chance to relive portions of our childhood with over a dozen vintage arcade games to choose from. I’m not going to give them all away, but some games that you’ll see will be Dig Dug, Star Wars, Ms. Pacman and Donkey Kong. For the others, I guess you’ll have to come to the show and see what they’ve got!

Last but not least, members of the Geek Chic Elite team will be on site all day! We’ll be set up with a table selling our tee shirts and soaps, as well as taking photos of cosplayers for the site at our small photobooth we’ll have set up, so if you’d like some shots from our professional photographer, please feel free to drop on by and give us a visit!

We’ll see you there (that’s the Sheraton Airport Hotel & Conference Centre at 801 Dixon Road, Toronto) on Saturday, April 19 from 10 to 5.
