Earth vs Space Junk: Time To Clean Up The Skies
April 28, 2013Earth has declared war on space!
Well not space itself, but all the junk floating around in it. Scientists have come up with some pretty incredible ideas on what to do with all of that space junk just floating out there, orbiting our little blue dot in the universe.
To gather up the 27,000 pieces of debris out there, scientists want to use nets, harpoons, lasers, and even suicide robots to bring all that junk back down to Earth. Now these ideas would cost millions of dollars to fund, and take years to make happen, but this is a great opportunity to get these materials back and to hopefully recycle them for future space endeavor.
There has been ever increasing concerns over space junk since 2007, and the issues that could arise if some of the bigger pieces were shot down, spraying flaming junk all over residential areas. Also the very dangerous reality of some of that junk hitting future space programs or shuttles, thus endangering the lives of the astronauts even further than they already are.
I am sure we will hear much more about this in the near future as scientists start working on these projects, because if there is one thing I would love to see happen, it is space harpoons.
