Carnival of ParaHorror 2013

On Saturday, the Rapids Theatre in Niagara Falls, New York played host to the bizarre, strange and haunted by hosting the Carnival of ParaHorror Convention.

The Rapids Theatre is a pretty nostalgic place for me. I had seen a lot of bands there when I was much younger and I didn’t even remember the place until I got inside. Originally built as a movie theatre in 1921, the building underwent time consuming construction to restore it to it’s original state with a balcony and sculpted ceiling. Now it plays host to many concerts and this time, the Carnival of ParaHorror Convention.

There were many things to draw crowds in, but perhaps the biggest were some actors visiting from The Walking Dead In attendance were Daniel Thomas May (who played Allen on the show), Kevin Galbraith (the evil Swamp Walker), Tyler Chase (who played Allen’s son, Ben) and Moses J. Moseley (Michonne’s pet walker boyfriend). The celebrities were all set up on the front stage of the theatre for people to visit and get autographs and photos with. There were lots of Walking Dead fans there, as well as some zombies shambling about and not to mention visits by both Freddy Kruger and Jason Vorhees.

During our time there we had the chance to see many different artists and their wares, including http://www.mealymonsterland.com/–weird, strange and odd dolls, http://www.wonderstrange.com/–with a collection of art from plush candy corns (that I need in my life) to sculptures, art and clay, and even a parahistorian group, Beyond Ghosts. There were also a couple mediums, other painters and artists (including the incredible Monster Matt Patterson!).

There were also two performances by Riley Schillaci, who specializes in sword swallowing. We caught her 3PM show in which she swallowed swords, pierced her cheeks, breathed fire and even walked up a machete ladder. Her show is definitely not for the faint of heart, even I had to look away once or twice! She was a real crowd pleaser though with an incredible talent. She was featured on “America’s Got Talent” season six, though was rejected because she ‘didn’t smile enough’. She is also one of fewer than twenty female sword swallowers in the world and has worked with Ripley’s Believe It or Not.
