It’s a 24 Hour Charitable Gaming Marathon!
July 1, 2015What better way to raise money for charity than drinking a whole bunch of Red Bull and tackling some of the best in current and retro multiplayer gaming over the course of 24 hours?
That’s what our gaming aficionados plan to do starting at 12PM EST on Saturday August 1, continuing on until 12PM EST Sunday, August 2. We will be attempting to raise at least $1500 for the Free the Children charity. We had a hard time deciding what games we were going to play on what consoles, so we decided that two simultaneous livestreams were in order so that our players would never be bored with the options they have throughout the night and into the wee hours of the morning. Here’s the lowdown on the event:
Where should I tune in?
For Xbox One games, visit us at http://twitch.tv/veronagames
For retro games, including what is sure to be a very interesting Super Smash Bros. tournament, visit us at http://twitch.tv/vist3k
Why should I tune in?
Not only are we doing this for a great cause, but things may get strange and goofy in the early hours, and we will need you guys to keep us company. Play trivia games with us, ask us questions, give us words of encouragement and, oh, you can win some great stuff, too!
What will you be doing?
Playing tons and tons of games, primarily. We’ll be having giveaways, hosting a Super Smash Bros. tournament, tossing n00bs online in Halo co-ops, celebrating donors and a lot more. It’s going to be a super fun time whether you are tuning in on the Xbox One channel, or the retro gaming channel. We’ll have a schedule of events and a teaser of some prizes you may be able to win by donating or tuning in closer to the event date.
How can I get involved?
All kinds of ways! Help spread the word on social media, especially on Twitter. Make sure to include our handle @GeekChicElite or our event-specific hashtag, #GCE24HOURS. We also have a Facebook event that we will be updating as the night goes on with donations that we have received, as well as giveaway information and much more. Donate to our cause on our official Free the Children fundraising page with a credit card, or through PayPal on one of the livestreams. Feel free to jump in on some of our games, chat with us on Twitch and give us some great motivational speeches, or even consider your own gaming marathon for the charity of your choice. You can also share this image across social media, too.
What is Free the Children?
Free The Children is a non-profit organization that was started by Craig Kielburger in 1995 – he was 12 years old at the time. Craig gathered together a small group of his Grade 7 classmates from his school and Free The Children was born.
Free the children from poverty. Free the children from exploitation. Free the children from the notion that they are powerless to effect change.
Those are the messages that sparked Craig’s passion, and continue to fuel the mission of the organization today. Every day the movement grows and every day more young people are free to achieve their fullest potential.
Why did you choose Free the Children?
It was suggested by a team member who grew up knowing about the good work that Free the Children has done. We research all of our potential charities before committing and through Charity Navigator we found that Free the Children has a 93% transparency score and that 90% of their charitable donations go directly to the cause.
At the GCE, heroes don’t just have to be in our video games. They can be anywhere in our everyday lives, and you can be one with us.
