Have We Found Our Spider-Man?
May 15, 2015Asa Butterfield, titular star of Hugo and Ender’s Game, is strongly rumoured as the next person to take the mantle as the web-slinger for multiple installments in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. Rumours recently surfaced last month about how Asa was on a shortlist with other actors such as Nat Wolff, Tom Holland and Liam James. Asa however, is almost a certainly going to swing into the role as Latino Review claim that he is currently in final negotiations.
While Spider-Man will have his own solo film in 2017, the character is likely to appear in Captain America: Civil War next year. Spider-Man plays an integral role in the Civil War comics, but it is not clear yet whether the film will take the exact same route as the comic arc.
This will also be the first time where the actor looks like the same age as the character, which has comic fans in a joyous mood. Problems with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire mainly resided in how old they both looked when playing a high school student. Asa on the other hand, seems to be perfect at looking the part.
Asa will be the third person to play the character on the big screen since 2000. The 18 year old from London has enjoyed strong success over the last few years, playing significant roles in major films like Ender’s Game, Hugo, and The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas. Despite being from London and playing a character born and bred in New York, it is certainly not unheard of for a British actor to play a major superhero. Christian Bale, who is Welsh, enjoyed huge success in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy while Henry Cavill, born on the Channel Islands, is currently the big screen incarnation of Superman.
Who do you think should play the next Spider-Man? Let us know in the comments below.
