Losing a loved one is never easy; but David Lynch, wasn’t a loved one. Not exactly. His unique voice shined through in his work…and in that way, it felt easier to know him. It makes the loss all the more real to his millions of fans around the world.

Today, the acclaimed filmmaker died at the age of 78. His family has asked for privacy during this difficult time. In a Facebook post on his official account they said: “[t]here’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’
It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.

Lynch was nominated for multiple Academy Awards and is known for Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, The Elephant Man, The Lost Highway and as the co-creator of the television mind-f*** Twin Peaks.

He recently shared that we was diagnosed with emphysema due to a life-long smoking habit, and revealed to Reuters that he was homebound, saying “it would be very bad for me to get sick, even with as cold.”

While we’ve lost the great man, his work remains an indelible imprint on modern cinema, and his impact on the medium will continue for generations to come.
