1960s Strip Goldtiger Rediscovered! Sort of…
February 23, 2013Goldtiger: A lost 1960’s cult newspaper strip created by Antonio Barreti and Louis Shaeffer, a duo consumed so deeply by their work that Barreti still continued to produce the comic strips through four years mental rehabilitation in a Turin clinic after a breakdown. It was edgy. It brought stylized violence and was packed full of action. Now, thanks to writer, Guy Adams and artist Jimmy Broxton, Goldtiger will live once again via a KickStarter project looking to reprint the entire series.
Except… they’re not.Adams and Broxton devised the idea of Goldtiger being a ‘lost’ strip that was originally created to act as competition for the comic Modesty Blaise, but it was cancelled due to it’s content. The whole project was originally going to be presented anonymously along with fictional characters Barreti and Shaeffer being as much a part of the story of Goldtiger as the comic strip was, but since the duo have turned to KickStarter to fund their project, they realised they would have to be a bit more honest about the origins.
“God knows what the repercussions would have been otherwise,” says Broxton, “when people realised there never was a Goldtiger strip.”
“It’s a shame in a way,” says Adams, “it would have been fun to maintain the illusion. But the background to the strip’s creation, and the way it sent its artist mad is a major part of the overall story. We hope to do a series of these books and readers will realise that the fiction and ‘non-fiction’ elements will soon begin to blur, it’s all part of the one big story.”
Still, even with the illusion of the writers and the mysterious comic strip gone, I am already finding myself more than interested in the production of Goldtiger. With 21 days to go, there is still lots of time to raise the funds needed to produce ‘The Poseidon Complex’, the first Goldtiger story in a hardcover book featuring 128 pages. The funds also go to creating ‘nutty trinkets’ including buttons, t-shirts and stylish messenger bags.

Nutty trinkets – these awesome messenger bags.
