Van Sant To Take Over Death Note?

News about the North American live action remake has been quiet, but now have some interesting news about the project.

According to The Tracking Board Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Milk) has been assigned to direct the newest adaptation of the manga Death Note by writer Tsugumi Ohba and manga artist Takeshi Obata.

This is a very interesting choice of directors for the project considering that Van Sant’s history is in very grounded real world dramas, and there is some concern if he will be able to capture the supernatural element of the story. Death Note has already been turned into a movie, anime, and video game since it’s creation and it will be interesting if it will be able to capture western audiences the same way it did back in Japan.

For those not familiar with the story of Death Note, it centers on Light Yagami, a high school student who discovers a supernatural notebook, the “Death Note“. This notebook grants its user the ability to kill anyone whose name and face they know. The series centers around Light’s subsequent attempts to create and rule a world “cleansed of evil” as “God” using the notebook, and the efforts of a detective known as L to stop him.

Van Sant replaces Shane Black, who was attached to direct as recently as 2013. There is no word on when filming will begin, or who will be cast.
