Star Wars Episode VII to Revisit TatooineApril 12, 2014
Originally set to rebuild in Tunisia but may move locations.
There has been no official word yet from reps at Disney but The Hollywood Reporter has been told by sources that Abu Dhabi is the next likely site to represent the desert planet, Tatooine.
The iconic planet which is Luke Skywalker’s hometown and has appeared in every Star Wars film to date aside from The Empire Strikes Back was originally shot in Tunisia in Africa, but due to the recent civil unrest, the makers of the film appear to be looking elsewhere to set up.
Meanwhile, in the town of Mos Espa, the location of the original Tatooine that still stands today, an encroaching sand dune threatens to completely bury the set, which doubles as a tourist attraction in the area. There is currently an IndieGogo campaign set up in order to attempt to raise the funds needed to save the iconic site. The Tunisian government has allocated $100,000 for the project thus far and are hoping that private donors and sponsors make up the other $100,000 that they will need. Work is already underway (as seen below in photos from the Save Mos Espa website) but it is estimated that this work will only give the site another eight to ten years before the possibility of being buried again.
