On The Rack – June 4th, 2014

June 3, 2014 1 By EVA

Check out what great reads you can get at your comic book shops starting June 4th in this weeks edition of On the Rack!

Hey everyone, feels great to be back and doing On The Rack once again! I’d like to take the time to thank fellow writer Scott for filling in during May. I thoroughly enjoyed each week and having you as a guest writer here.

As we start into June, it appears we are moving right into the thick of comic convention time for the summer. It’s a good chance to pick up those back issues you’ve been looking for, or even those hard to find variant covers like the Superman: Doomed blank variant that I’ve been trying to track down. It also means you get a chance to meet some of your favorite artists, writers, and more to get your books signed or artwork on. Now as much as I know you all love to bin dive and look for those hard to find elusive back issues, it’s also great to be prepared with the most current issue of your favorite titles when you go to meet your celebrities.

So without further ado, let’s get right to what’s hitting the shelves this week before you hit up your next con on the weekend.

Boom! Studios

Big Trouble In Little China #1

If you are like me, this movie was a part of your childhood and is a classic staple that sometimes gets overlooked. With Boom! doing this issue, it will be a fun must have for your collection.

“Jack Burton, a macho, truck-driving adventurer, finds a stowaway hiding on his rig, ‘The Pork Chop Express’, but that soon becomes the least of his troubles. He helped his best friend Wang save his fiancée from the clutches of a demon, but now the wedding has been invaded by more evil forces with one thing on their minds–revenge against Jack Burton!

Big Trouble in Little China mashed together ’80s action and supernatural fantasy movies with ’70s kung-fu flicks. This is the first time any new BIG TROUBLE stories have been told, and we have the film’s original directer, John Carpenter, working with Eric Powell (THE GOON) on the story. You can’t beat that!

Eric Powell is a huge fan of BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, so the sense of humor and over-the-top action he brings to THE GOON will be all over this book. Plus, Brian Churilla’s (THE SIXTH GUN) art on this perfectly captures the outrageous world of BIG TROUBLE.”

DC Comics

Action Comics #32

Superman: Doomed has been a great story run so far for those that have been following. If you haven’t, I strongly suggest you give this a chance as I don’t think you’ll be disappointed in this brand new tale of Superman and the effects of a new and improved Doomsday. This issue here is the next installment of the story with a few more to come in the next couple months.

“SUPERMAN: DOOMED continues with ‘ENEMY OF THE STATE’ as Superman struggles against the Doomsday virus – but is he losing the fight? How much longer can he stay in control? And how far will he be pushed when he’s faced with a world against him and a shocking betrayal at the end of this issue?”

Batman 66 Meets Green Hornet #1 (of 6)

Guess what, Kevin Smith fans! This miniseries is finally here with Kevin at the writing helm. This is an all around win. Batman, Green Hornet, & Kevin Smith all in one purchase? I’m pretty sure this one is a no brainer.

“In 1967, television history was made when two masked crime fighters met in a historic crossover. Now, superstar filmmaker Kevin Smith and actor/comedian Ralph Garman join forces with artist Ty Templeton (BATMAN ’66) to bring these two iconic characters and their famous partners together again.Set in the continuity of that earlier team-up, Batman, The Green Hornet, Robin and Kato must go up against a very different General (formerly Colonel) Gumm. What crime could be so deadly as to force these rivals to put aside their differences and join forces again? And what surprise does Gumm have up his sticky sleeve? Co-published with Dynamite Entertainment.”

New 52 Futures End #5

Set 5 years in the future of the current New 52 universe, this tells a story of Batman coming back to stop a terrible future from happening. It kicked off on free comic book day and has been continuing every week.

“Mr. Terrific unveils his latest technical achievement – but will it take over the DC Universe? Plus, Firestorm’s inner conflict explodes!”

Wake #9 (of 10)

We creep a little closer to the conclusion of this fantastic mini series. I’ve been pushing this book the whole ride and it hasn’t let me down so I hope you’ve been picking it up.

“A post-apocalyptic USA only partially above sea level, a country overrun by corrupt leaders fearful of horrific mermaids, a voice dredged up from the deep, dark past – how will all these factors tie together in the acclaimed miniseries by Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy? Will Leeward discover something more to the life she knows out across the vast ocean? Find out in the penultimate issue of THE WAKE!”

IDW Publishing

Judge Dredd Mega City Two #5 (of 5)

Dredd fans, the end of this series is wrapping up this week.

“Dredd’s West Coast adventure comes to an explosive conclusion! As Judges from around the world gather for Lawcon, Dredd’s secret mission leads him into high-speed mayhem-and toward a potentially catastrophic revelation. All eyes are on him, but the City of Courts has one last trial to put him through…”

Image Comics

Rise of the Magi #1

This is another title that was previewed during free comic book day and its finally hitting the shelves. Marc Silvestri has some wonderful artwork in the book and this looks to be the beginning of a great story arc.

“A small black sphere contains all the magic that exists past, present, and future. Without it, two worlds would not survive. The sphere has been protected for centuries by a spell that was believed unbreakable. Asa Stonethrow, a common man in the world of magic, discovers the spell has been breached and a small chip of the black sphere has been stolen!”

Spawn #244

Spawn fans, I have not forgotten you. This months issue is out this week and continuing Todd Mcfarlane’s great staple series.

“After seeking out answers about Sara’s whereabouts, Jim leaves the individual responsible, but not without sending a message. Will he make it to Sara’s aid in time?”

Marvel Comics

Amazing X-Men #8

Still in X-Men mode after seeing Days of Future Past? Not to worry, there always plenty of new X titles hitting the shelves and this has been a great run so far.

“Wolverine takes a trip back to Canada… But when he discovers that an old friend is missing, his visit soon transforms into a hairy situation. New writers Craig Kyle and Chris Yost!”

Magneto #5

This is one of those titles that you know Marvel wont keep going for too long, but it’s a must-have for a fan of the Master of Magnatism.

“Magneto continues his crusade of safeguarding the future of mutantkind by whatever means he deems necessary, all the while pursued by agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But now someone new is hot on the trail of the Master of Magnetism. Someone with ties to his past. Will she be his greatest ally or his downfall… or both?”

New Warriors #5

Did you know that the New Warriors are back? This popular title from the past has made a comeback and should be a welcome calling to the original fans of the series.

“With half the team trapped in the bowels of mysterious and very probably haunted WUNDAGORE MOUNTAIN, the rest of the all-new New Warriors deal with the bar scene in Prague! • A look inside the mind of happy go lucky SPEEDBALL, the most hated man in America. A dog and cat play chess, the result of which could destroy NEW YORK CITY.”

That wraps up the week for On The Rack. It’s a rather light week but as history has dictated previously, it most likely means next week is going to be a little heavier with titles. Be sure to drop me a line and let me know what you picked up and what I missed that you would have liked to be on our weekly here.
