On The Rack – June 18th, 2014June 17, 2014
This week On the Rack is going to be a slow week in comics. There are a few comics starting off with number ones and some mini-series kicking off, so if you’ve noticed you’ve been picking up less and less lately and looking for something fresh to add to the pile, this may be the week for you. Here at the GCE we’ve taken the opportunity to dive into bins and pick up things we may be missing or wanted to get around to reading. you can check out those throwback articles right here on the site as we aim to bring you more and more great comic articles. But, we all know OTR means new comics, so lets get down to the goods!
Thomas Alsop #01
This looks like a great series about to kick off with monsters and magic and a hero with a title passed on down the generations. The artwork looks pretty gratifying as well which is always a nice compliment to a good book. Look for this one to have a possible quick selling following as this 8 part mini series kicks off this week.
“WHY WE LOVE IT: Bringing readers great books from new talent has always been close to our hearts here at BOOM! Studios. Chris Miskiewicz and Palle Schmidt have created a warlock for these modern times, and we’re delivering them to the best audience in comics!
WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: Fans of John Constantine and Dr. Strange will love this new take on the magic-wielding hero who battles demons on the streets… and in his own mind. Thomas has money and fame, but also the burden of a being this generation’s occult warrior. Can he survive the battles both within and without?
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Thomas Alsop is the current “Hand of the Island,” a title handed down from generation to generation. He guards Manhattan from evil, using his family’s prowess for magic. Being a thoroughly modern warlock, he deals with something even more evil than demons… reality television!”
Dark Horse Comics
B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #120
Still celebrating 20 years of Hellboy? Well good news; so is Dark Horse with the newest issue out this week.
“A blackout causes panic at B.P.R.D. headquarters as Kate comes face to face with the ghost of a satanic veteran.”
#1 for $1: The Strain
These books are absolutely great. Nothing beats getting a good story for a buck, and especially when the company releases it again to the readers. No bin diving to read this one, you’ll find it On The Rack!
“Based on the Strain Trilogy by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, this horrifying first chapter confronts a mysterious outbreak of diabolical proportions and puts an original twist on the vampire genre!”
Batman Eternal #11
Why not have a little Batman in your week? If anything you know that Scott Snyder will deliver on a solid story like usual.
“The trial of Jim Gordon begins!”
Harley Quinn #7
This has been a hit series for the Harley fans out there. New issue this week and its still selling strong.
“Welcome to Ladies’ Night, where Harley gets her butt kicked by Big Bertha Bensonhurts at the roller derby, starts a massive bar fight and teams up with Poison Ivy to find out who hired all those pesky assassins!”
New 52 Futures End #7
“The two halves of Firestorm encounter big troubles: some personal, some potentially deadly! And Plastique comes face to face with the DC Universe’s horrifying future! Five years from now, the DC Universe is reeling from a war with another Earth, leaving the world unprepared for an approaching evil that threatens to destroy the future. Can a time-traveling Batman Beyond help a massive cast of the DCU’s finest avert the impending apocalypse? Find out in this new weekly series that will forever alter the direction of The New 52!”
Superman H’el On Earth TPB
I don’t normally put up graphic novels in the list, but if you never got a chance to read this as it came out, you can now get the whole story at once. If you’re a Superman fan I can tell you that Scott Lobdell and Kenneth Rocafort absolutely hit this one out of the park.
“This figure from Krypton’s past hopes to revive the dead planet – in place of Earth! As hero fights hero, will the Kryptonians be able to defeat H’El, who is their equal in every way?”
Judge Dredd Mega City Two Directors Cut #1
It wouldn’t be a proper week in comics if we didn’t give you a little Dredd. Director’s cuts are usually packed with all kinds of extras for a behind the scenes look at the book.
“Mega-City Two has been drawing praise from comic critics and longtime fans alike. Now, in celebration of this acclaimed miniseries, we are proud to release a special Director’s Cut of the first issue, which includes all of the covers along with the comic’s script, plus annotations and sketches, giving a rare insight into the inner workings of a comic book from initial thought to publication. Join series writer Douglas Wolk and artist Ulises Farinas as we reprise their story of Dredd’s first visit to the West Coast!”
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #35
Ninja Turtles are out this week with a slew of variant covers, including an Eastman cover.
“Raphael and Michelangelo pay a visit to Old Hob. Turns out the cat’s been busy trying to create new mutants while the Turtles have been away! Will Raph and Mike try to stop him? The choice becomes more difficult when Slash reveals a surprise!”
Original Sin #4 (of 8)
I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about this series. Have you been following? If you have, I would love to hear opinions on the series so far as the next issue hits the rack this week.
“TRUST NO ONE. NOT EVEN YOURSELF. One hero goes rogue. Another loses his head. Dr. Strange and the Punisher team up for a daring raid. And all trails now lead to one suspect. But he… how is that even possible?”
Uncanny X-Men #22
“The war between the Uncanny X-Men and S.H.I.E.L.D. heats up! Can Cyclops and his team track down the source of this new brand of sentinels? And is S.H.I.E.L.D. really behind these attacks?”
Wolverine and the X-Men #5
Its definitely an X-men week this week in Marvel. Okay… every week is if you follow all the books.
“Wolverine’s at the mercy of the Phoenix Corporation while Storm races to save the Jean Grey School! Only Evan can save Fantomex from death – but dare he? Latour and Asrar continue the smash hit of All New Marvel now!”
“A generational saga/war unfolds… mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and one poor mall rat named Jubilee caught in the middle.. The JGS has always been a school. Is it time to become an army? Or will their differences prove their greatest asset?”
Well there we have another week of On the Rack. I hope you enjoyed it and be sure to let us know what you picked up and what was good that we didn’t cover. See you again next week.
