On The Rack – July 23rd, 2014

July 22, 2014 0 By EVA

Welcome back to another week in new comics. How did you make out at the shop last week? I’d still love to hear what titles you may have picked up and read. DC continues to celebrate Batman’s 75th anniversary this week while Marvel is getting ready for the release of Guardians of the Galaxy in theaters. Let’s get right into things and see what’s coming out On The Rack.

Dark Horse Comics

The Goon: Occasion of Revenge #1

Fan favorite Goon is back for a monthly run for a few months. If you haven’t checked this out before, this would be worthy of a pick up for sure.

“In Eric Powell’s biggest story since 2008, what’s left of the Zombie Priest’s race of witches comes after the Goon, forcing him to face his nightmares or lose his town!”

Groo vs. Conan #1

I remember Groo growing up. He was a staple in the comic industry and was widely known. The fact that he is going to be paired Conan for a few issues sounds incredibly interesting, don’t you think?

“It had to happen: the most heroic warrior in history meets the stupidest as Robert E. Howard’s immortal Conan the Barbarian crosses swords with Sergio Aragones’ Groo the Wanderer in Groo vs. Conan #1. This four-issue miniseries was concocted by the Eisner Award-winning team of Mark Evanier and Sergio Aragones, aided by master illustrator Thomas Yeates and master colorist Tom Luth. Will Conan annihilate Groo? Will Groo turn out to be the man who can defeat Conan? We’ll see.”

DC Comics

Batman #33

Zero Yea is finally coming to a conclusion. Look for this months issue to come with a couple different variant covers, including a 75th anniversary cover.

“It’s been one hell of a year in Gotham City, and it all comes down to this: Batman vs. The Riddler! Gotham City and the Dark Knight will never be the same! Don’t miss this special, extra-sized finale of ‘Zero Year!'”

New 52 Futures End #12

This series is still going strong on a weekly basis. Is anyone sticking with it and what do you think of it so far?

“With Grifter still missing, his partner turns to the only person on Earth who may need more help than Cole! And 35 years from now, Brother Eye has conquered all of humanity – but what does it have planned?”

Superman #33

If you picked up last issue of Superman, you will be interested to see what’s going to take place in this new story that has a very familiar formula.

“It’s up, up and away as the titanic team of Geoff Johns, John Romita Jr. and Klaus Janson continue their epic run on the Man of Steel! In their second issue, we learn more about the mysterious Ulysses and what his emergence will mean to Clark Kent and the world.

Meanwhile, a mysterious figure is targeting Metropolis with strange mechanical creations…but why? And what dark secret from Clark’s past does it connect to?”

IDW Publishing

Ragnarok #1

IDW has been pushing the release of this book pretty hard. It will come with two different covers, and you can bet will have a big push this week with San Diego Comic Con only days away. Be sure to grab your copy this week, as it will most likely sell out and go to reprint.

“Ragnarök… the Twilight of the Gods in Norse mythology…the destruction of the Nine Worlds. And now, three hundred years later, the birth of vengeance. Walter Simonson returns to comics in a BIG way with an all-new series… and doing what he does best!!

My wife and my children are dead. My brothers and sisters are dead. My parents are dead. The Great Enemies still live. But I swear on the shattered bones of my kinsmen… they will not live forever. I shall become… the storm. Walter Simonson is one of the most acclaimed and respected creators in comics.

He has done defining runs on Thor, Manhunter, Star Slammers, Elric, Orion and more. Now, in his first creator-owned series in 20 years, he brings his tremendous artistic arsenal to a brand new world… the twilit world of Ragnarök!”

Image Comics

Outcast By Kirkman & Azaceta #1 (2nd Printing)

It didn’t take long for this new comic to sell out at stores, leaving demand enough for Image to put it to reprint. I’m sure Kirkman fans will be scrambling to get their hands on this. Did you manage to get a first printing when it came out?

“NEW HORROR SERIES FROM THE WALKING DEAD CREATOR ROBERT KIRKMAN! Kyle Barnes has been plagued by demonic possession all his life and now he needs answers. Unfortunately, what he uncovers along the way could bring about the end of life on Earth as we know it.”

Marvel Comics

100th Anniversary Special #1 Avengers

Marvel still has these going each week and we can’t really tell you much about them other than they come with two different covers and are a commemorative issue.

Amazing Spider-Man #4

Everyone’s favorite wall crawler is back this week with an Original Sin tie in.

“ORIGINAL SIN tie-in! The radioactive spider that gave Peter Parker his powers bit someone else, too! Who is Silk and where has she been? Don’t miss this incredible new character who will be a major Spider-player for the whole year!”

Storm #1

Marvel is going to give one of the X-Men’s female leads her own book. I’m not entirely sure how long this run will go, but if you’re a Storm fan, this will be one series you won’t want to miss for your collection.

“Thief. Goddess. Headmistress. Queen. The X-Man called STORM has always defied a single title. And her desire to better the world has never been limited to only her own kind. On a mission to foster goodwill and safeguard the mutant race’s continued existence in her own way, Storm will travel the globe, confronting man and mutant, god and monster and everything inbetween. She will overthrow tyrants, quell tsunamis and strive to see her dream for the world realized. She is STORM, a hero like no other… and the skies will tremble at the sight of their namesake.”

Wolverine and the X-Men #6

The Phoenix Corporation vs. the X-Men and their very future hangs in the balance! Jason Latour and Mahmud Asrar conclude chapter one of the smash hit of All New Marvel Now!”
