Power Rangers Gets a New FranchiseMay 7, 2014
Go go Power Rangers! Lionsgate and Saban Brands will be breathing new life into the 1993 series.
Today Variety announced that Lionsgate, the company that brought us The Hunger Games has plans to develop and produce a live action Power Rangers film with Saban Brands, who created the 1993 live action television show.
While few details have been released, including whether or not some former stars of the original show like Amy Jo Johnston or Jason David Frank will return, Saban are confident their partnership with Lionsgate will give them exactly what they are looking for.
[blockquote]”Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level. They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from ‘The Hunger Games’ to ‘Twilight’ and ‘Divergent.’”[/blockquote]
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer felt the same saying,
“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Haim Saban and his team to maximize the potential of this immensely successful and universally recognized franchise. The Power Rangers stories and characters have been embraced by generations of audiences for more than 20 years, and today they are more powerful than ever.”
The new franchise is aimed at re-envisioning the Rangers, who were a group of teenagers that were chosen to protect the world from invading alien forces. Using their morphers, they can change into superheroes, as well as pilot giant mach robots shaped like different dinosaurs. They could also combine their robots to pilot one huge mech, “Megazord”.
All the while, the triumphant cheers of those who grew up watching the Power Rangers after school (including myself) ring across the Internet. More details to follow as they are released.
