Incredible Groot Costume Build
May 22, 2014Guardians of the Galaxy character, Groot, has inspired one artist to recreate him for a costume.
Lee of HurleyFX has been working on an incredible creation for the better part of a month now. He’s creating Groot from the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film and he’s documenting his work in progress on his Facebook page (linked above).
While his hope is to have it ready for the release of the film, August 1, the costume may be making its debut at Dragon*Con, one of the United States largest comic conventions next to the convention behemoths, San Diego Comic Con and New York Comic Con. Dragon*Con is very well known for it’s large attendance of cosplayers, as well as their masquerade and it would be a perfect place to unveil such intricate work like what is going in to make Groot. He will make his appearance with Gamora at his side, cosplayed by Lee’s wife Lauren, who also has been lending a helping hand sculpting and bringing Groot to life.
Lee, a sculpter and airbrusher for about five years now, says that the hardest thing about creating Groot is not only having to hide stilts in the costume to give him additional height, but really bringing the character to life as he is CGI in the film. Making a costume of a walking tree creature is already hard enough, but the paint job on him has to be believable to the naked eye, under different lighting conditions, and with photography, Lee says. The hard work that he’s put into everything is evident already by the fantastic photos followers get to see and we can’t wait to see the final result.
You can follow his progress on his Facebook page and you can check out some of his work in progress photos below.

I’ve actually figured how to get the legs to work right on the one I’m building with my running stilts
