Will you be watching Fear the Walking Dead in two weeks? Here is our spoiler free run down of the first episode.
At this point everyone is familiar with The Walking Dead and what it means to survive in the zombie apocalypse. What we have not seen so far is how it all began, how did the world turn upside down and turn into the world we know in TWD. Fear (what it is being short formed as) is starting the answer those questions and it all seems to start in Las Vegas. The show was created by Robert Kirkman, who was responsible for the original comic and first series. The show is also brought to us by Dave Erickson (Sons of Anarchy) who co created the show with Kirkman, and will be directed by Adam Davidson (Community, True Blood).
The story centers around the Clark/Manawa Family and their struggles with discovering the world is changing and slowly falling apart in front of their eyes. The first episode revolves around Nick Clark (Frank Dillane), the families black sheep, whom is taken into custody in a hospital where doctors and his family believe that everything he has seen was just a drug fueled incident. He struggles to comprehend what he has seen himself, trying to prove to himself what really happened, but also has his doubts. During Nick’s time in the hospital, you first see the signs that something is not quite right, holding tension throughout his time there that something might just happen. This tension carries throughout the episode, keeping you wondering just when, and if the dead will appear.
The first episode also introduces you to Travis Manawa (Cliff Curtis) and his fiance Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) who both work at a high school in LA, watching as fewer and fewer kids are coming to school, and those kids who have been watching videos emerge online of the dead are now arming themselves in wait. Travis seems to be the anchor of the show, but also seems a little too reluctant to really follow through on anything. He is a teacher in the school, and never really seems to make much of an impression throughout the first episode. Madison is the schools guidance counselor and seems to be naturally more open to the change that could be occurring, being the one who talks to a student about what he has seen online and why he is carrying a weapon in the school.
You also have the daughter of Madison, Alicia Clark (Alycia Debnam-Carey) who seems to be a typical teenager. She has a boyfriend, she cares about her family and wants to generally be a good person. We see her show this by taking care of her brother who is going through drug withdrawal and the moments she shares with her boyfriend.
This first episode gives us a nice look at the characters that we will be getting to know throughout the first season and how they will fit into the new world that is unfolding around them. The episode does its best not to give away anything that will be coming as well, just hints of what is coming, and how people are choosing to deal with it. One shortcoming though is that nothing seems to stick with you, the characters have a lot of promise, but do not seem to be very special. This could also though be exactly what is needed, these are just ordinary people, going through the same things that we the viewer do.
The first episode will be an extra long episode coming in at about 1 1/2 hours maybe 2 with commercials.
Fear the Walking Dead premieres August 23rd on AMC.
