After mysterious Tweets on @BBCOne, the case has been solved.

Around 11PM EST last night, it seemed that a villain had returned to take over the BBC One Twitter. That villain was none other than Moriarty (played by Andrew Scott) from BBC’s popular Sherlock series and a cryptic message was left that sent the loyal fanbase into a frenzy.

For hours, Twitter lit up with excited fans, wondering what the message could mean. Rumor had it that there would be a Christmas special and when actor Martin Freeman (who plays Watson on the show) was asked about it, he didn’t confirm or deny anything, saying, “If that’s going to be a special – I’m speaking off-message here; if this was New Labour I’d get fired – I think that might be for next Christmas. A Christmas special. That’s what I understand.”

Still, fans waited to hear what BBC One would say at 2:21PM and they weren’t disappointed.

While this is an incredibly long time away for fans of the Sherlock series (myself included), it’s undoubtedly difficult to get the shows two main stars, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, scheduled in for filming when they are so busy with other projects. The pair will meet together in January 2015 in order to film the special that will likely air as the ‘Christmas Special’ in late 2015, with production starting on a fourth season sometime in 2015 as well. The fourth season, which will be made up of of three 90-minute episodes, will air at an undetermined date in 2016. We will then see the return of Moriarty and, possibly, the solution to the biggest mystery yet — his survival during the episode The Reichenbach Fall. Still, despite the long wait (that most of the fanbase are unfortunately used to by now), it will be great to see the pair back to solving Sherlock’s biggest case yet.
