Celebrity Ice Bucket Challenge Compilation

The Ice Bucket Challenge, a new sensation that has been tearing its way through social media, is a challenge that is issued and involves the challenger dumping a bucket of ice over their head and donating to the ALS Association in the United States. It has gone viral and has become quite the pop culture sensation with many celebrities taking up the cause.

In case the you were wondering ‘why ice water?’, when you dump a bucket of ice water over your head it sends a numbing sensation, as well as the temporary feeling of the inability to breathe, which temprorarily mimics symptoms of ALS. Unfortunately there is no cure and most who are diagnosed with the disease have only a few years left to their lives. The most popular case was of Yankee’s first baseman, Lou Gehrig, for whom the disease is nicknamed. After being diagnosed with ALS in 1939, when cases of the disease were incredibly rare, he died in New York City only two years later on June 2, 1941.

After the Ice Bucket Challenge went viral on social media, public awareness and charitable donations for ALS have soared to unprecedented levels. By August 21st 2014, the charity had attracted more than 739,000 donors and donations for the month currently stand at a whopping $41 million dollars compared to last years total donations of only $19.4 million.
