Is True Blood Dead?
June 30, 2014Season 7 is here but does anyone even care anymore? (spoilers inside)
So here we are… the last season of True Blood. One question keeps rolling around in my head as I watch the second episode of the new season and that’s “why am I watching this?”
The season premiere brought in 4 million worldwide viewers; compare that to only a few seasons ago where they saw almost 6 million people tuning in. Was this drop due to things such as piracy or the soaring costs of cable? Or due to the lack of interest of a once very loyal fan base?
We have seen the characters fight off vampires, faeries, werewolves, zealots, and the ever present danger of each other’s genitals. In this season, the H-Vamps are wreaking havoc across Bon Temps and the surrounding areas, and its up to the townsfolk to with together with the non-infected vampires for survival.
We keep seeing a lot of the same tropes get thrown around in this season that we have seen in the others, such as does Sookie still like Eric? Why is Tara’s mom such a crazy bitch? Will the townsfolk stop running around at night when they know things are going to hell? And my favorite, people keep getting slaughtered in the town but yet no one from the state cares at all and they have to fend for themselves.
We also have obvious things thrown in the show for the sole purpose of drawing people in to watch it because its risque, or will shock some people. In the latest episode, we have two of the lead males go at each other in a “will they, won’t they, oh yeah they will” encounter that so far only seemed like a reason to have two men with their shirts off make out a bunch. There was also the elimination of a key character from the series inception; mind you she was a very annoying character and I wished her death came a few seasons back, but it felt like it had no real meaning to the story at all except that she is gone, people are sad (kind of) and then they move on without any further thought.
Now, keep in mind a lot of this is personal feelings about the show and I’m not just trying to bash it. I will still be watching the show until the very end, but only to find out how it ends.
“Just to find out how it ends” seems to be the answer a lot of fans give to the final seasons of the shows they used to love but may not be as good as they once were. We saw this happen with Chuck, X-Files, and Heroes, just to name a few.
I wish that the writers use this final chance to create a proper send off to a show that has been on for almost a decade and created a huge following. Despite my feelings towards the latest season, myself and many other fans still adore and love the show. Since we are only two episodes in, I will give it a chance, but don’t be mad when I say “I told you so.”
True Blood airs Sundays at 9PM on HBO.
