Unrest: A Kickstarter Success Story Announces Release Date
May 29, 2014Jaipur-based developer Pyrodactyl Games has just announced that the release date for their Kickstarter-funded story-driven adventure RPG Unrest will be Wednesday, July 23rd, 2014.
The game, which has already garnered media attention thanks in-part to it’s successful Kickstarter campaign, focuses on the lives and struggles of ordinary citizens in the ancient Indian city of Bhimra. The development studio itself is based in Rajasthan’s famous ‘Pink City,’ so the game’s inspirations and influences are unique in the gaming scene.
At the conclusion of the game’s Kickstarter campaign last year, Unrest had received pledges equalling twelve times its target goal. Pyrodactyl has spent all of that windfall on better visuals, more content, a larger cast of characters, and an overall longer and more comprehensive cycle of design and iteration.

Let’s take a closer look inside Unrest…
Set in a fantasy interpretation of ancient India, Unrest is built as a story-driven adventure RPG where the narrative adapts dynamically to choices made in-game. Players take control of five ordinary citizens struggling to get by in the famine-stricken city-state of Bhimra. Each of the unique characters have radically different goals, and only through a careful manipulation of the game’s in-depth conversation system—and, optionally, the judicious use of violence—will players be able to achieve them.
Poverty, disease, treason, and political and societal upheaval conspire against each character in a city on the brink of collapse. Players will be faced with unexpected burdens and moral dilemmas in the struggle through each chapter – knowing that choices made to help one character may have unforeseen implications for others.
In Unrest, there are no heroes of legend, there is no mythical quest, and fate has not chosen you. Your fate is your own to craft.

Some key features…
- Diverse and grounded characters – Unrest features playable characters who may be found as the background NPCs of conventional role-playing games… or, alternatively, the villains.
- Unique setting – Set in India, Unrest’s narrative and design are influenced by Indian customs, culture and traditions. Taking the road less travelled by mainstream gaming for a special flair.
- No black or white choices – Unrest asks complex questions with often dramatic consequences. Players are invited to make sophisticated ethical decisions they may not won’t normally find in games but will constantly confront in life. Imagine yourself as a little girl facing an arranged marriage with a groom from a different caste. What courses of action do you have? You can attempt to make your future in-laws call off the ceremony, or try to run, or even accept your fate, or even something else – the choice is up to you.
- Reactive and dynamic storyline – Hard decisions made in one chapter have consequences in the next. Choices made as one character may well determine the fate of another
- No fail states, not even death – If a character dies or fails in their objectives, Unrest makes it a part of the narrative. Playing in the backer-requested ‘Iron Man’ mode ensures there are no second chances.
- Complex conversations – Organic dialogue offers an unparalleled level of control and involvement from the player. You’ll always know exactly what you’re saying and how you’re saying it, and you’ll be able to see how much the person likes, fears, or respects you as a result
- Violence is rarely the answer – Combat in Unrest is rare and always avoidable. When faced with the possibility of death, it’s up to you to decide how much you’re willing to risk.
- Lush art and music – The game’s hand-drawn sprites and environments, coupled with its original, classical Indian soundtrack, set a unique and stylized mood
- Unrest is currently in the final stages of development and due for release on July 23rd 2014
