Introducing The New Xbox 180
June 19, 2013Finally the months of complaining paid off, Xbox changes their stance on always on, and used games.
As the Microsoft exec’s plot away in their subterranean bunker, finding out new ways to enforce an Xbox State, some good news has finally surfaced regarding the new console. Microsoft/Xbox has changed their rules on always on and for used games. This just came down the pipeline as Microsoft confirms news that was broken by Giant Bomb about the Xbox One features that were turning every gamer into a PS4 buyer.
Originally you were required to connect to your Xbox One every 24 hours or risk being locked out of the account and games. Now Microsoft states that it is only necessary when initially setting up the console, and it is not a requirement to use an internet connection past that. Another dastardly plan was to not allow gamers to trade, sell or let their friends borrow their old games. There was going to be limited licenses per game and once those were up… the game disc is useless. Now Microsoft says that you can take your game anywhere and do whatever you want with it, just like on the 360. Another restriction that was lifted was all games will be downloadable on day one, and be able to be played the same day just like if you bought it in stores. Previously there was a restriction on this that would only allow those with a hard copy to enjoy the game right away.
This is all great and wonderful, but is it too late to save the Xbox One? Will gamers cancel their PS4 pre-orders and put one in for the XB:O? According to forum posts and the like, it doesn’t seem like anyone trusts Microsoft enough right now to make that decision. It was easy enough for them to tell us that they are changing their mind about these rules, but how easy will it be for them to switch back once we all have the console in our living room?
Personally I have set up a golden pedestal for my PS4, complete with velvet rope, and a maid to Swiffer it clean.
