The Walking Dead: Who is Tyreese?

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers for both the Walking Dead television show up to the mid-season break as well as the comic book up to issue 49.

For everyone who has seen the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead, you know the television world is finally being introduced to one of the comics most iconic figures and important leaders in the survivors group, a man named Tyreese.

Up until now, the role of Tyreese in the group of survivors has been predominantly controlled by T-Dog and Daryl as Rick’s right hand man. With the death of T-Dog in the season three episode “Killer Within” and Daryl’s subsequent kidnapping by the Governor, speculation is that Tyreese may fill the place of right hand man at Rick’s side.

Tyreese’s comic book appearance is much earlier and he joins Rick’s group as they journey away from Atlanta in search of somewhere safe. He earned the groups trust quickly with his cheerful and charismatic nature, as well as his willingness to help. As a former NFL linebacker, his impressive physical strength came in handy clearing roads and up close skirmishes with the undead. His weapon of choice was a hammer, as it was revealed he is a terrible marksman, despite the groups effort to improve him. He eventually establishes a relationship with Carol, and his life is taken by the ruthless Governor in issue 49 of the comics.

How long Tyreese will be on the show is still up for debate, whether he will replace Daryl in the group if something happens or if he will be featured for only a short time before he meets his death. Perhaps he’ll even be a part of a rescue mission to save Daryl and meet his end with the Governor. The possibilities are seemingly endless.
