The Geeky Weekly: June 7 – June 14
June 14, 2015It has been a busy, busy week here at the GCE. With members returned from Niagara Falls Comic Con, other members of our GCE team geared up to cover the Monte Carlo TV Festival and are preparing for E3. So there will be lots of news. This week the news was both good and bad, we lost one of the greats- Christopher Lee, and we will continue to pay tribute to Mr. Lee and his lasting and powerful performances on our world. Thank you.
∴ Youtube Gaming. That’s it – that is the name of Youtube’s new game stream and video platform. While Twitch, recently purchased by Amazon, pulls the most clout in that space, Youtube, owned by Google, is ready to throw a few punches. Maybe they can settle it Street Fighter style?
∴ Pokémon XY: Pikachu the Movie 1-Hour Special is exactly what it is named, a Pikachu one-hour movie special. All about Pikachu. The movie will feature five acts.
∴ Jurassic World certainly took it out of the Park with its opening weekend. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard spearheaded the new turn on a world with dinosaurs to have the biggest opening weekend ever. Jurassic World brought in an earnest $500 million – that’s the biggest global debut weekend ever at the box office. So, I’m guessing you saw it, right?
∴ Nintendo has been hogging the game news this week ahead of E3. After leaked media showed Ryu and Roy in the latest Super Smash Bros., the rumor was confirmed with both appearing for purchase on the Wii U and 3DS. There were also other SSB announcements, including that all 51 characters will have Amiibo’s, upcoming DLC stages from the original N64 game, and new Miiverse costumes including Megaman EXE, Zero, Isabelle, Splatoon Inklings, and Heihachi from Tekken. And for Wii U players, you’ll be able to post replays directly to Youtube.
Oh, and Ryu and Roy are available now and are DLC characters.
∴ In more Nintendo news, the video game staple is bringing Mother to Earthbound: Beginnings for the Wii U. Nintendo will continue their announcements on Tuesday. They sure know how to tug at the nostalgia heartstrings… and releasing in North America too!
∴ The next Quentin Tarantino film, The Hateful Eight is getting a release on the tail-end of the holiday season. Tarantino has released several films during the most joyful time of the year, so he’s no stranger to spreading his style of holiday cheer. The Hateful Eight was shot on 70mm film and is a movie about outlaws, gunslingers, bounty hunters… the typical holiday bunch. Keep your calendars marked for January 6, 2016.
Thanks for sticking with the GCE! Welcome to all new readers and hope you enjoy our Monte Carlo TV Festival and E3 coverage in the coming days! Enjoy your geeky week and we’ll see you soon!
