The Geeky Weekly: December 13 – December 20

It seems that the news mill did not churn out too much information this week, or perhaps, what likely happened is that everyone in the media industry feared being swallowed by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That’s probably what happened, because after seeing it, it’s all you can think of. There was still plenty of news, though, as brave creators had some great announcements this week, giving us the Geeky Weekly.

∴ The golden trio has been announced in the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Coming to London’s West End in July 2016, Harry, Ron and Hermione have been cast. Actor Paul Thornley will be Ron, Jamie Parker is Harry Potter, and Noma Dumezweni is Hermione. The stage play is in two parts and J.K. Rowling calls it an eighth installment.

∴ Konami creator Hideo Kojima has officially left the company after a year of bad blood. The brain behind Metal Gear, has been left out of promotional materials and was banned from The Game Awards. Kojima reportedly left the company on October 9th, but according to Japanese news outlet Nikkei, stayed on for two more months due to contractual obligations. Rumors circulate that Kojima may be joining Sony.

∴ John Wick 2 is coming, and it comes with a little extra surprise, Laurence Fishburne. Rejoining his Matrix co-star Keanu Reeves. Also in the film are Ruby Rose, John Leguizamo, Bridget Monahan and Riccardo Scamarcio. With Chad Stahelski back in the director’s chair, the film will be in theaters in 2016.

∴ Starring in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them as the character Porpetina Goldstein, Katherin Waterston has just been cast in Ridley Scott’s latest installment to the Alien franchise as an unknown character in Alien: Covenant. The only information about her character is that she is named Daniels. Covenant is a sequel to Prometheus, which falls in line with the current prequel trilogy. Ridley Scott is best known for the 1979 work Alien. Covenant will be out on October 6, 2017.

∴ July 16, 2016 is the date for the new Ghostbusters movie, and we got the first official pictures of the film. The film stars Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon and Melissa McCarthy, and is directed by Paul Feig.

∴ Michael B. Jordan’s star power has been on the rise this year, after starring in Fantastic Four and the highly-acclaimed Creed film with Sylvester Stallone. The young actor is adding another work to his resume, co-writing a comic book for Dark Horse. Along with writer Nathan Edmonson and artists Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz, the comic book North will be about a paramilitary organization’s spy who finds out he is more powerful then intended to be. The series will drop sometime in 2016.
