The Batman 2 delayed to 2027
December 28, 2024Today on Threads, DC Studios Head James Gunn confirmed The Batman 2 is being delayed to 2027.
He cites the reason for the delay as “there isn’t a full script,” noting “Matt [Reeves, the Director] is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess how long a script will take to write.”
There is some speculation (rampant speculation, rumours, innuendo, maybe gossip, even) that the delay is to better situate Pattinson’s Batman in the forthcoming DC Universe.
It’s long been said that Reeves’ world was operating outside the established film canon and was standing on its own. Of course, that was before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over. For a lot of reasons it doesn’t make sense to have the same character operating in a different universe. It will confuse casual fans, and muddy the storytelling, until the inevitable Batman on Batman meeting that people can’t help but hope for.
It would be one thing if Pattison wasn’t good as Batman/Bruce Wayne; but he is. He would fit in well with the world of superheroes James Gunn is building, and he wouldn’t need to reinvent the wheel. It exists, but separately from the Snyderverse, from which Gunn is trying to distance himself.
Only time will well who the DCU’s Batman will be, but for now we’ll need to wait for Pattison’s next adventure.
