Review – Kim Reaper: Oni Press’s Cutest Grim Reaper

Review – Kim Reaper: Oni Press’s Cutest Grim Reaper

New from Oni Press comes the cutest comic book, Kim Reaper. Sarah Graley, writer/artist of Rick and Morty: Lil’ Poopy Superstar and creator of Pizza Witch and the webcomic Our Super Adventurebrings us this new story and let me tell you, I am excited.

Kim is your average college student; she works a part time job and goes to class. Only difference is that her job is to help guide lost souls into the afterlife. No big deal.

Becka is also your average college student, she has a major crush on a beautiful goth girl who just so happens to regularly visit the underworld. But, Becka doesn’t know this.

When Becka finally gets enough courage to ask Kim on a date to the local pub, she follows Kim into this weird portal thing and interrupts Kim at her job. Becka sets of a chain of events and now her and Kim have to work together to fix everything.

I’m completely in love with this comic. Personally, I love the contrast between cute and dark things, so this is right up my alley. The art is adorable and definitely reminds me of something like Bee and Puppycat. It’s cute, bubbly and perfect for the 20-something’s that are just trying to be adults. It’s pretty much everything I could ask for in a comic: LGBTQ representation, cute with a touch of darkness and relatable adult situations!

The pink and lilac colors in the backgrounds are soft and adorable. I’m also enjoying the sparkly bits that happen every so often. Graley’s use of background color reinforces Becka’s (and her friend, Tyler’s) emotions so perfectly. The expressions on the characters faces I still can’t get over. They’re so fun, I feel like I was probably making those faces while reading it. Also, can I just say that Kim’s eyeliner is so on point.

I really enjoyed the writing, it just felt very conversational. Mostly because it’s kind of similar to how I talk. It was easy to fall into Becka and Tyler’s conversation because of this.

I’m so excited to continue to read Kim Reaper. I can’t wait to see what adventures Kim and Becka get into. And to see if they ever end up going on that pub date!
