Halloween ComicFest Top 5 Comics
October 22, 2013Come see what your local comic book shops have in store for you for Halloween ComicFest!
Halloween season is fast approaching once again and that means more excuses to dress up and have a great time. More and more Halloween seems to becoming the most popular time of the season only losing out to possibly, and dare I say it, to Christmas. Unlike Christmas though, at Halloween we get free treats from door to door and now we can get free comics too. Free comic book day seems to have expanded to the Halloween season as well. Participating local shops are now giving away those frightful titles and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. A fair amount of stores will have costume contests, parties and much more.
Since you may be thinking of stopping by a shop to check out Halloween Comicfest, I thought I would throw out a few of my top five titles and personal favorites for you to check out while you are there.
The Walking Dead – This one is a no brainer. With the popularity in today’s pop culture, Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead is a go to title. Now for those of you that have not read the book here is the greatest part; you are really not going to spoil all that much on the TV show. Robert Kirkman and the writers of the TV show have made just enough changes that they keep even the long time comic fan guessing at what is going to happen. The general plot premise is still there, but events take place differently or there are characters in the show that are not in the book and vice versa.
Batman: The Long Halloween – It wouldn’t be a top five list without Batman involved and Halloween doesn’t fall short for the caped crusader. The Long Halloween is a 13 issue miniseries written by Jeph Loeb and artwork by Tim Sale. Without giving away the plot, we can boast about how great this miniseries is and the fact it goes down as maybe one of the top stories for the Batman culture. Pick up this series and read the inspiration that contributed to the 2006 film Batman Begins.
Wake – Scott Snyder has done a lot more than just write great Batman books in the New 52 universe and one of those is current running miniseries Wake. Travel deep undersea with the newly formed group of scientists performing secret science like things… and stuff. As always there is a complication and nothing ever goes smoothly, especially when you’re a comic book from Vertigo and have monsters involved. Backed by some great artwork by Sean Murphy, we are beginning to see all the covers are forming a giant picture as well. This story is sure to deliver as it is already drawing in many readers in the first few issues.
American Vampire – Since I already told you Scott Snyder has written more than just Batman, lets go to one more where he teamed up with horror legend Stephen King. This Eisner Award-winning book series is currently on hold but isn’t too far along. With only being about five books in, it would be a great series to jump on board with. It has spun two separate stories as well from the main story arc called Survival of the Fittest and Lord of Nightmares.
B.P.R.D. – the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, otherwise to some, Hellboy. Jump into this paranormal universe by Mike Mignola and you can easily find yourself submerged into all things that go bump in the night. Two movies were spawn from this wonderful creation, and the stories just keep on coming out. The graphic novels should be readily available at any shop for you to pick up.
