Recently, Steph caught up with Geek x Girls Roxy Lee GG to talk cosplay, makeup and conventions. Check out our interview with her!

Tell us a little about yourself.

Hey there, I am Alana aka Roxy Lee GG. I am a special Fx makeup artist/cosplayer/gamer/Youtube Guru/Villain fanatic/movie collector and all around geeky kinda gal. I work for the page and site GeekxGirls as an Official Geek Girl and admin and I also have my own makeup company! I am 26 years old from Canada and yeah that’s about me right there.

How long have you been cosplaying?

Umm I started my page and joined Geek Girls just over a year ago and that is when I really got into the world of cosplay on a bigger spectrum but I had been big on Halloween and such for as long as I could remember. My first official cosplay was in 2010 when I worked events for “Bad Kids go to Hell” as a bad girl/Veronica cosplayer. That’s when I caught the bug.

What was your first cosplay you ever did?

Like I said before it was technically Veronica, but I consider my first real cosplay that I made and worked on was Lara Croft which I debuted at Comic Con 2012. I made all the holsters and harnesses from scratch using leather belts and such. We shot an awesome shoot outside with my friend Wandering Dana. It was really fun to be Lara although most people think I am Katniss when I wear her.

What is one cosplay you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t yet?

Oh boy, I want to do a Big Sister/ Eleanor cosplay from Bioshock 2 so bad! So very, very bad! Bioshock is my all time FAVORITE game franchise ever… I even have a rapture script tattoo on my neck. So that is a dream of mine, but the sheer magnitude of it scares the living crap out of me and my wallet. But it will be done, I can’t not do it.

You are also a fantastic makeup artist. Do you find you tend to pick cosplays that also allow you to use your skills in that regard?

Well shucks, thank you so very much for thinking so. Oh for sure, all of my cosplays if not most tend to have some aspect of special Fx in it, and if they don’t I add it in and just say..IT’S BATTLE WORN SO AND SO. Like Zoey from Left for Dead; I always have to add in wounds on her face and chest but it makes sense right, zombie apocalypse and all. But I tend to choose cosplays that I can add my flair to, to me cosplaying is tip to toe right, costume, makeup, hair and personality. I like to throw it all into a blender and make myself into someone completely different. My favorite cosplays I do are the ones where I am totally unrecognizable.

How long have you been doing makeup for?

I have been toying with makeup forever. I started doing it on the side for friends and shows about 4 years ago, and then I started actually teaching myself how to apply and learn product about 2 years ago. And now I actually have my own business and get gigs and such in film/TV and for photo shoots and that started about a year ago. I worked from the ground up and made sure I had a good quality to my work before putting myself out there professionally. I still have so much to learn but I am always willing to try and teach myself and learn from others. I am le sponge.

What are some characters you’d like to do makeup for in the future whether its on yourself or someone else?

I have so many dream makeups. I know Doug Jones is my idol in makeup transformation. To be able to make him into one of my own creature designs would be a dream come true. To be able to work on a Tim Burton film would be my goal as a makeup artist, and to be able to just continue to see how many different looks I can transform into cosplay wise personally is just a passion and hobby for me. Keep pushing boundaries and such. I think my next big goal is to do a splicer from head to toe with actual tumor prosthetics on my body and my mask molded into my face which would include a full facial reconstruct with a prosthetic. I also want to start sculpting full creatures.

Where do you look for inspiration for costume or makeup work?

It’s weird, I literally can be watching something and I have seen it a million times before and all of a sudden I go….I WANT TO DO THAT NOW. And that’s it, once the idea is in my head it had to be done. I get most of my inspiration from my favorite characters from video games and movies since those are my two biggest loves. But I also like to flip it and make my own original concept characters based on famous ones. Like what if Eric Draven’s character were a woman? I wanted it to be as accurate to how he was portrayed without making it too feminine but also retain the female essence so that is exactly what I did. Most of the characters I adore are men, so I want to be able to keep my womanly flair and just build on that. I start with a what if then finish with a could be.

How long have you been a member of Geek Girls? What is your favorite thing about being a part of them?

I have been with them almost a year and a bit now and honestly I can’t imagine my life without them. Our group of girls we have is so solid it is insane. A lot of people think oh you get a group of girls together and it’s drama. And honestly we each have our individual moments, personally. But as a whole we are freaking amazing together. I have never been a part of something so positive, so loving and so honest to god creative in my life. We are always constantly stimulating each others minds and talents, challenging one another to do better, supporting one another when we think we are on the wrong track, and just being there for a good talk or a good hug. I think the one thing I love most about our page and site is that we have made it into a safe place for cosplayers. We have made it into a home that has a family in it and there is so much love that people instantly feel welcomed. We decided from the get go that we would work very hard to ensure that the women and men submitting and commenting did not ever have to feel the pain, embarrassment or humiliation of putting themselves out there only to be ridiculed. There are so many other pages that allow that to happen that we did not want to be one of them. We monitor and admin every single one of our posts to make sure it is clean and respectful. And when we see the women and men thanking us for that and respecting our decision to do so it is all worth it. We work solely off submissions and we credit EVERYTHING. I am so proud of this page and site and so proud of Dana and Jody for creating such a wonderful place where we can all just be ourselves.

Do you have any upcoming conventions you’ll be cosplaying at?

Yes! I have two. Fan Expo Toronto is the big one for me, I have a booth there doing makeup and selling prints in Artists alley, booth A210. You can actually make makeup appointments for you cosplays or just generic makeups you want done in advance, or I am accepting walk ins for special fx wounds, makeup and face painting. That is August 22-26 2013.

I am also going to be attending Unplugged Expo October 26-27th 2013. I will be there with my awesome Geek Girls team at our booth and doing a couple panels I believe on everything from makeup to wigs, to costumes to bullying and such!

Other than that the events for me are up in the air, I do not attend any outside cons in the US and otherwise at the moment due to health and money restraints but I hope to soon!

Thank you so much to Steph and the GCE for this awesome feature, I am so thankful for all your support in my career and cosplays. I wish you guys so much success and cannot wait to see you at Fan Expo! All my pages and links are below where you can find me and if you would like to book any makeup appointments!
