On The Rack – June 11th, 2014
June 11, 2014It’s another week of On the Rack! If you had a chance to attend one of the many great conventions going on this weekend, we’d love to hear about what you may have found or picked up while you were there. This weekend a lot of The GCE team were at Niagara Falls Comic Con and there has been a lot of great stories and experiences being told by all the staff. If you get a chance, be sure to jump over to the Facebook page and get on the fly updates.
This week we dive into a great list of things coming out as well as some new stuff for us to take a chance on. Let’s take a look at what you want to take a glace at when you hit the shop this week.
Boom! Studios
Empty Man #1 (of 6)
Could be a good series and at only 6 issues it wouldn’t be too big of an investment to get a complete story.
“WHY WE LOVE IT: There’s nothing scarier than horror that hits home-a tale of terror only one or two steps removed from our reality. THE EMPTY MAN is a dystopic version of the world we know, where a terrifying disease has taken on almost deific connotations. WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: Cullen Bunn (THE SIXTH GUN, VENOM) and Vanesa R. Del Rey (HIT) are two of the most exciting talents in the industry, and perfectly in sync on this haunting new crime procedural. WHAT IT’S ABOUT: It’s been one year since the first reported case of the Empty Man disease, and no drug has been able to slow its progress. The cause is unknown, and the symptoms include fits of rage, hideous hallucinations, suicidal dementia, followed by death, or a near lifeless, ’empty’ state of catatonia. As murder cults rise nationwide, the FBI and CDC enter a joint investigation of the Empty Man, hoping to piece together clues to stop the cult and uncover a cure.”
Sons Of Anarchy #10
Have you been keeping up, SOA fans? This title moved to a full series after issue 6 when it was originally planned to be a mini series. The SAMCRO crew keeps hitting the rack month after month with great selling points. Find out why this series did so well and sold out quickly.
“With their release from prison rapidly coming due, Jax, Clay and the other jailed Sons of Anarchy must find a way to settle the score before they’re let loose, along with the hell that’s coming so close on their heels. Jail was bloody, but freedom may bring even more carnage to the Sons of Anarchy!”

Dark Horse Comics
Star Wars #18
It’s not a trap, but it is a great series for any Star Wars fan. With things leading up to the new movies being produced, can we expect anything from this series to be adapted to film? Better pick this up while you can and feed the force craving I know you are all having.
“Princess Leia’s wedding day has arrived-and so has the Empire! As Darth Vader’s fleet bears down on the planet, the Rebels scramble to defend themselves-they have been double crossed!”
DC Comics
Detective Comics #32
Good news Bat-fans, the next issue in the story arc is hitting this week. If you’re having trouble finding things to get signed while you’re at conventions, this title would be a good one as the very talented Francis Manapul is know to frequent a lot of conventions.
“The next great Batman murder-mystery continues to unfold in ‘Icarus’ part three, brought to you by the acclaimed creative team of THE FLASH! Batman is caught in the clutches of the crime boss known as ‘The Squid’ as he digs deeper into a whodunit for the ages!”
Infinity Man And The Forever People #1
Dan DiDio brings another new series to DC this week.
“Four of the best students from New Genesis arrive on Earth to study and aid in the advancement of humanity – but they soon discover a darker purpose to their mission: a threat so great that it may bring the multiverse itself to its knees!
The only thing that stands between them and total destruction is the mysterious entity known as the Infinity Man! Don’t miss the start of this new series by Dan DiDio and Keith Giffen, the team that brought you the over-the-top adventures of O.M.A.C.!”

Justice League United #2
“It’s all out battle issue as Hawkman has a showdown with Lobo as the League is teleported to Rann to face the shape-changing alien called Byth! This looks like a job for Supergirl!”
New 52 Futures End #6
This series is moving along very quickly so don’t miss an issue or you’ll get left behind in the story.
“Ray Palmer, Frankenstein and Amethyst take a dangerous journey into the Phantom Zone! And Batman Beyond’s mission could be over before it begins when someone discovers his arrival five years from now!”
Superman Wonder Woman #9
More of the great series Superman: Doomed. The series is being beautifully written and so far has been a very interesting tale. If I haven’t said it before, you should be picking this up.
“SUPERMAN: DOOMED continues with ‘ENEMY OF THE STATE’! As things get more dire on Earth for him, the Man of Steel may have to go into exile in space, but the self-proclaimed protectors of Sector 2814, the Red Lanterns, don’t want him there either! Don’t miss this deadly face-off between Kal and Kara!”
Dynamite Entertainment
Sherlock Holmes Moriarty Lives #4 (of 5)
Where are all my Sherlock fans that are starving for more BBC Sherlock? Well its not the BBC, but it may do for now. It’s almost wrapping up but would be a great mini series to pick up for the fan looking to collect more Sherlock.
“The deadly game of cat-and-mouse between world’s most notorious villain and the most dangerous man in Switzerland continues to unfold with skull-cracking, wife-stealing, cattle-mutilating action! Moriarty begins to move his plan into his endgame, but he may have already been outwitted by the master alchemist who delights in murder and atrocity. Can Moriarty be evil enough to emerge as a hero, or will the people who have trusted him find themselves betrayed? The game is afoot in the penultimate issue!”

IDW Publishing
Angry Birds Comics #1
No I’m not kidding, the game that took the world by storm and became marketed to death is now a comic book. Is anyone going to pick this up? I’d love to hear if someone did and hear your thoughts on it.
“Angry Birds, the world’s most popular mobile game franchise, makes it’s comic book debut! Featuring a fun-filled, action packed story from Eisner-nominated creator Jeff Parker, these comics are ready to slingshot their way off the page and into your hearts! Check out our Angry Birds Fun Packs in the merchandise section, featuring 4 different stories!”
Godzilla IDW Era
IDW is still pumping Godzilla weeks after the theatrical release and I’m quite happy to get more of this monster movie legend.
“The King of the Monsters is no stranger to comics, but no other company has brought him to the comic page like IDW! Packed with a monstrous amount of artwork, this special edition book takes you through every Godzilla series from IDW featuring work from the creators that helped make IDW’s Godzilla the fan-favorite.”

Image Comics
Manifest Destiny #7
It’s the beginning of the next story arc for this great title. As you all should know, this is a good time to jump into this series. I’m still predicting that this could end up a hit TV series if the right network were to discover it and pick it up.
“NEW STORY ARC! Lewis, Clark and the surviving members of their expedition continue westward, only to learn there is nowhere to run on the river…”
Starlight #4
“Duke and his young companion are getting deeper into Tantalus’ underground movement, doing everything they can to infiltrate the invaders and meeting some unlikely allies. It’s been 40 years since Duke last held a gun. Does he still have what it takes to drive out alien invaders and save Tantalus for a second time?”
Walking Dead #128
With a new story arc beginning last issue, Walking Dead has picked back up with readers as they explore a whole new look behind the characters and changes that may leave the reader guessing where it could go and who will be next to die in the book.
“After all this time, she should be more prepared.”
Marvel Comics
All New X-Men #28
In my opinion, this is one of the most interesting X-Men titles going right now.
“The future Brotherhood of Evil Mutants make their next devastating step against the sanctity of the X-Men. Plus, more on the new mysteries surrounding Jean Grey!”

Amazing Spider-Man #1.2
Did you know that Peter Parker is back? Well now all you Spidey fans can rejoice and get back to more stories of everyone’s favorite wall crawler, well everyone except…
“J. Jonah’s Jameson’s crusade against Spider-Man kicks into overdrive! He warned us! He told us that kids might try to emulate Spider-Man! And he was RIGHT! Meet CLASH, New York’s newest menace. He may be Spidey’s biggest fan, but he’s about to become one of his worst enemies. Wanted by the cops, turned away by the Fantastic Four, his grades are slipping, and he still hasn’t figured out this whole crime-fighting-thing. Pete’s not a hero… not yet… but he’ll get there. Somehow.”
Uncanny X-Men Special #1
Be sure to pick up this special crossover issue which is sure to be packed with fun tales involving some of Marvel’s great characters.
“UNCANNY X-MEN, IRON MAN & NOVA CROSS OVER! Cyclops is kidnapped, but by who?! But what force could bring the Children of the Atom, the Armored Avenger and the Human Rocket together!”
That concludes our action packed week of On the Rack. I hope you had a great weekend and an even better week going through all the titles hitting the shelves. Be sure to drop us a comment and let us know your thoughts and reviews of what you picked up.
