High School Game Dev Turns to Kickstarter
April 2, 2015Many times on Kickstarter we see companies that are trying to garner attention to make their start ups happen, but it is not often that we see a high school student that is working hard to make his dreams come true as a video game developer.
For a while now, we have seen Kickstarter bring people’s dreams to life with the power of crowdfunding; people who wouldn’t have been able otherwise to fund their endeavours are finding people who are interested enough in their projects to invest. This is what Ethan, a sixteen year old high school student from Northern Ireland hopes to do with his game Cereal Killers, a PC platformer that aims to make ‘boring breakfasts fun!’
Since indie platformers have been so popular in the PC market recently, Ethan is looking to fund his project through Kickstarter to get it fully developed and marketed in order to find a distributor that will get it seen on many different indie platformer gaming sites.
Through the beginning stages of making Cereal Killers Ethan has learned how to design the game purely by trial and error; he doesn’t have a fully realized game that just needs a little bit more funding to reach its peak, but instead is looking to fund the project so he can build it from the ground up before marketing it to different distributors. Being a high school student, Ethan does not necessarily have access to all the required technology that larger indie gaming companies may have, so he is looking to upgrade his equipment as well.
What will he do if he is fully funded?
Other than create the game of course, he’s looking to then market the game to indie platformer sites that can sell his game to the consumer. With those funds, Ethan will then be looking into saving up to go to University for game development to hone his craft and learn how to produce even bigger, better games.
