On The Rack – March 19, 2014

by on March 19, 2014

Hey everyone, welcome to another week of On The Rack. We are going to have a somewhat short list this week, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t some great titles hitting the shelves. During the shortened list weeks like this I love to take the chance to dive into a series that I may not have during previous weeks. I recently picked up Joe Hill’s amazing series Locke & Key. Look for a review on that series to come.

Boom! Studios

Clockwork Angels #1 (of 6)

Good time to check out a new series, and you don’t have to invest too much to jump into a limited series that only runs 6 issues. This one by the looks could be an original story that will be very interesting. It hits the rack with 3 different covers as well.

“Owen Hardy, like all the people of Albion, has lived his whole life under the rule of The Watchmaker. His entire life has been planned down to the exact second. But what happens when a young boy decides that things should not always goes as planned?”

Dark Horse Comics

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #117

For the Hellboy fans out there, this is your week for a new issue of the B.P.R.D. Its the 3rd of 5 covers celebrating the 20th anniversary of Hellboy.

“A defiant Iosif launches a full-scale assault against the Zinco tower, confident that his troops can make short work of its monster security. Meanwhile, Liz goes after the Black Flame. Unfortunately for her, the Flame knows it was Liz who killed him. And this time, he’s the one in control.”

The Witcher #1

If you’re a fan of the Witcher video games then you’ll probably enjoy this series. The games have collectively won over 250 awards.

“Traveling near the edge of the Black Forest, monster hunter Geralt meets a widowed fisherman whose dead and murderous wife resides in an eerie mansion known as the House of Glass-which seems to have endless rooms, nothing to fill them with, and horror around every corner.”

DC Comics

American Vampire Second Cycle #1

This award winning series is back once again with Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque at the helm. I’ll let official synopsis do the talking here.

“The Eisner Award-winning, critically acclaimed series is back! #1 New York Times best-selling writer Scott Snyder (BATMAN, SUPERMAN UNCHAINED, THE WAKE) and acclaimed artist Rafael Albuquerque (ANIMAL MAN) bring their bloodsoaked opus into the 1960s!  The story so far… Pearl Jones is a new kind of vampire, one of an American breed that can walk in the sun and has rattlesnake fangs. She’s beautiful and powerful – and she’s hiding from a tragic past. Skinner Sweet is an American vamp too – the kind you love to hate. He’s good when he wants to be, but most of the time he’s downright bad. He’s Pearl’s maker, but he’s off in Mexico with an agenda of his own. Will their two stories collide, or are they separated forever? And who is this new villain on the horizon, someone bloodier and more evil than anything seen in AMERICAN VAMPIRE before? Who is THE GRAY TRADER and what does his arrival mean for Skinner and Pearl? Whether you’re already a fan or interested in checking out this series, the extra-sized AMERICAN VAMPIRE: SECOND CYCLE #1 is the perfect jumping-on point!”

Harley Quinn #4

“Meet Harley’s new neighbors, and shudder at the horrifying realization that they are so twisted they make her seem like the normal one on the block!”

Superman Unchained #6

Back this week with a boat load of variant covers is Superman’s ‘Unchained’ series. The title has been excellent so far in both the writing and art department with Scott Snyder and Jim Lee.

“The Man of Tomorrow and the Superman of yesterday go at it – no holds barred! Supes goes full throttle after his would-be ally, Wraith, in a seismic battle ranging from deep space to the ocean’s floor and ultimately the core of the earth! Meanwhile, Lois Lane holds the key to defeating Ascension, but she needs to reach the Fortress of Solitude to ensure its safekeeping – not to mention hers! And she’s being pursued by a heavily armed force, and it isn’t Ascension!”

IDW Publishing

Only because I know you X fans wouldn’t be complete without some X-Men in your life each week.

“The next stage in humankind is here, and the Uncanny X-Men are leading the way! With original X-Man Cyclops at the revolution’s helm, Emma Frost, Magik and a new generation of mutants defend and educate all homo-superior as warriors of the atom!

But after relentless persecution from a society that fears and hates them, the Uncanny X-Men are going on the offensive! Their target? The international spy organization S.H.I.E.L.D! However, as Cyclops’ team fights to save their species, are they only digging themselves into a deeper and more dangerous hole?”

X-Men #12

When all else fails, lets fight some sentinels!

“Conclusion to GHOSTS. The Sisterhood is fully formed, and the battle for leadership begins! The X-Men must choose to take down the Arkea Sentinels or go after the Sisterhood.”

That wraps up another week of comics for me, and I hope you enjoy your trip to the shop this week. I’m going to go finish Locke & Key, so I can tell you all about it.
