Marvel’s Daredevil Renewed by Netflix for Season Two

In what should come as no surprise to anyone, anywhere, Marvel’s Daredevil has been renewed by Netflix. Season 2 will premiere sometime in 2016.

Daredevil has simultaneously been lauded by critics and fans alike, and while it’s by no means scientific, Rotten Tomatoes users have given the show a 97% fresh ratingIn fact, the only consistently negative thing that’s been written about Daredevil is that it caused fans a lack of sleep on its release date because people started watching at 12:00 am, (or 3:00 am on the East Coast), pretty much the minute it was released.

Netflix doesn’t release its audience numbers but it’s certain that viewership was strong, especially over Daredevil’s premiere weekend. Fans were clamouring for any and all Daredevil related content and most online outlets delivered! Our own team of Daredevillians (I’m coining that word, it’s a real thing now) collaborated about the show, asking questions such as given the show’s darker tone, “does Daredevil fit into the MCU” and “does [Daredevil] impact how you feel about the other Defenders shows coming?” You can read their take here.

So Daredevil’s renewal comes as no surprise, but Marvel’s announcement wasn’t completely without controversy.

It was revealed that Doug Petrie (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “American Horror Story“) and Marco Ramirez (“Sons of Anarchy“) will serve as showrunners for Season 2, with Steven S. DeKnight (“Spartacus”) departing to pursue previous commitments.

“While previous commitments unfortunately prevent me from continuing on with Daredevil into its second season,” DeKnight explains, “I could not be happier that Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez are carrying the torch. They were invaluable collaborators during our first season, and I for one can’t wait to see what they do with the show moving forward.”

Given Daredevil’s massive success, it’s probable that there isn’t anything more to DeKnight’s departure than the quote suggests. There’s no reason for DeKnight or Marvel to part ways unless it was absolutely necessary. Right?

It will be interesting to learn what DeKnight’s next project will be, once that information is revealed, it’s definitely something a lot of observers will be watching.

In any case, his efforts on Daredevil led to a masterpiece of superhero TV, and it’s going to be am agonizing wait until fans learn what becomes of The Man Without Fear sometime in 2016.
