DC Comics Rumored to Reveal Film Plans at San Diego Comic Con
June 14, 2014Marvel has had a major head start in the game of building a cinematic universe for their characters, while DC Comic properties currently sit in in secret in the hands of Warner Bros. being carefully mapped out. However, if the rumours that are currently flying around are correct, this year at San Diego Comic Con, DC and WB are going to be stepping out from the shadows with a grand plan for their superhero roster for the next few years.
The first scoop on these rumours came from Nikki Finke that DC has added seven films onto their schedule, all over a possible three year plan following on the heels of 2016’s Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice.
With Batman VS. Superman going for a May 6th release date in 2016, according to the rumours, it won’t be the only DC property to hit theatres that year. In July of 2016 we will see a Shazam film, featuring the character who was formerly known as Captain Marvel (his name was retconned in The New 52 so there was no confusion between the companies). This is the franchise that Dwayne Johnson has been potentially linked to.
Further out in 2016, Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be appearing in Sandman in the holiday season, though it will not be connected to the overall comic universe they are building. According to Finke, there is going to be a full roster of cameos in Dawn of Justice in order to setup 2017’s Justice League film, which will be followed in July of 2017 with a Wonder Woman movie starring Gal Gadot.
DC will apparently strike next in the 2017 holiday season with another offering; another Green Lantern film. This time it will be a different Lantern than Hal Jordan, which will be a spin off team up film from Justice League, potentially a Flash and Green Lantern pairing. In May 2018, we will see Henry Cavill return again in the blue and red tights in an official Man of Steel sequel, giving him three Superman appearances in three years across the multitude of films they are apparently planning.
Here is the rumoured rundown:
May 2016 – Batman vs. Superman
July 2016 – Shazam
Holidays 2016 – Sandman
May 2017 – Justice League
July 2017 – Wonder Woman
Holidays 2017 – Flash and Green Lantern (?)
May 2018 – Man of Steel 2
What Finke is also claiming is that during negotiations with the major actors to play these heroes is that cameo appearances were required to set up the Justice League film. As it stands the hero roll call for Dawn of Justice is; Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, The Flash, Green Lantern and Aquaman. With San Diego Comic Con coming in just a month, we will just have to wait and see how much weight there is to any of this and whether or not DC Comics will have a big reveal.
